It depends on what you are going to do with it and what your bank account looks like. If it is for targets/range go with a CZ 75 (or variant) or a Sig if the wallet can take the shock. If it is for carry consider a G19, Kahr, or compact 1911 clone.
There are tons of great guns out there that will get any job done. Try a few, do the math and pick one.

well for simplicity's sake I only have Glock's for 9mm, but I think you'd do well with any of these in no particular order

Glock 19/17
Sig P228/226
Beretta 92fs
HK USP/P2000/P30
S&W M&P

if you want something more eccentric and perhaps less practical, I vote for the
HK P7

My favourite 9 X 19 are the ones I own ...

- SigSauer P226 W German 2002 ... boring accurate but a classic.
- Browning HP 1978 ... boring accurate but feels so good in my hand ... an institution !
For making holes at the range > so much fun !
- H&K P2000 ... not so accurate but perfect size for CCW

Quite happy with those ones !

@hoytinak: WOW! You actually put 50k rounds through a gun (that's a big feat alone) but never had a jam? Sweet mother of god. Anyways, I say a Berretta 92FS Brigadier or a HK USP Tactical. Both great guns. But, the USP is much better. If you only wanna spend 500 though, the Berretta is def the way to go. The USP is 1K+, but it's worth it.

Personally I want a 92FS or an XD(M) because they look pretty in my hand.
