So much would depend on where I was. I'm going to assume I was looking at going up into the interior where I'm from.

Given the choice of anything legal to own (no full auto, short bbl rifles etc):

12GA Rem 870 in Stainless with as little bbl and as much mag as I can handle. If I had to stay alive and had to have only one firearm - this would be the one.
375 H&H Magnum in a Winchester Model 70. Open sights, no optic. Also in stainless.
17HMR Rifle - any of the nicer makes in a bolt action with a premium optic also in stainless. Mmm @ tasty rabbits / grouse.
257 WBY Magnum in a Mark V Ultralight for a walking gun - nothing less than the best optic I could afford to put on it. Food - getter at range, and pelt getter with head shots.
Revolver in 357 - S&W. No .44? No - the things that can kill and eat you in AK are better dealt with via the 12ga.

Of what I have:
12GA Rem 870 Wingmaster with 2x bbls - 28" VR plus a short smooth bore. Grouse are on the menu :) - that or one of my Model 12s. Finest pump-gun. Ever. Period.
7mm Rem Mag Ruger RTS with VX-III. I no longer live up there so I don't own a heavier rifle at this time.
Walther P22 extended bbl - Rabbit, anyone?
.223 Rem 700 Varmint - again a food and / or pelt - getter.
S&W 686. As above. This is a general purpose sidearm that's controllable, reliable and TOUGH.

If you do get a chance to go to AK I can safely say I've seen all the firearms listed used in the field to good effect on the species they were intended for (also read - legal for) - or as a survival tool. If it can freeze - leave it home at. If it isn't silly-reliable and SIMPLE, leave it at home. If you like it's firepower but don't shoot it really well - leave it at home in favor of a lighter caliber. And practice :)

By far the best weapon you can take anywhere is your alert, focused mind.

I've seen some of nature's greatest work there, from killer whales feeding against a seaside cliff to the caribou herd migrating across the tundra. If you go - take good care of it for all of us, and yourself.

It all depends on how remote the area is....

For backpack-into-a-cabin style living:
1. .35 Whelen - Stainless, Bolt
2. .22 WMR - Stainless, Bolt
3. .44 Mag - Stainless, Revolver, Double Action

For something a plane can land near:
1. .35 Whelen - Bolt
2. .270 Win - Bolt
3. .22 WMR - Stainless, Bolt
4. .22 LR - Pistol
5. .44 Mag - Stainless, Revolver, Double Action

Five guns? Poor mountain men that had to make do with one!

Anyway, with five to take along I think I could cover all bases.
1) 12 ga shotgun(small game & self defense)
2) Ruger 10/22(small game & plinking)
3) Quality bolt gun in 30/06(hunting)
4) 22 handgun. Likely a Single Six (plinking and small game)
5) Ruger 45 colt(defense when I can't take my rifle or shotgun)

I'd put a little more thought into it if I was really taking off. I guess I was wrong, choosing five might be more difficult than choosing one!

Very Interesting

I guess I would have to chose my 5 by what I already own...Here goes,

A good strong 22 so I'll pack up my CZ 527 M1 in .223 cal. with scope.

My Swiss K-31 with scope will work for most food gathering.

My Mosin 91/59 carbine with scope as a backup, and bear protection.

My yugo sks for fun.

My Cougar 8357 for sidearm in 357sig.

As you can see, I'm a milsurp nut....

Hmmm Tough call! I'd probably go with the following;

Mosin Nagant 91/30 PU-Sniper (As is: meaning no modifications) - Hunting rifle for large game.
Russian SKS (As is) - Hunting for small to medium game.
Polish Tantal AK-74 (As is) - Self defense
TT-33 Tokarev (As is) - Self defense small arm
Winchester 1897 Takedown (As is) - All purpose shotgun!

Ammo for all of these is easy to get in bulk and they are pretty reliable. I think this would make them ideal for remote locations.

That I currently own:
1. Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum, 4"
2. Marlin 1895G .450 Marlin with factory irons on it.
3. Mosin Nagant 91/30, sporterized, with bayonet!
4. Marlin 795 .22LR with Williams FP-TK irons on it.
5. <<empty. Don't own anything that doesn't already have the bases covered.>>

Ideal:
1. Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum, 4"
2. Marlin 1895G .450 Marlin, with good irons on it. Williams FP-TK.
3. Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker left handed, 7mm RemMag or .280 Remington with 6x40 fixed power scope (Leupold, Nikon, Burris, doesn't matter)
4. Browning Buckmark Hunter .22LR pistol.
5. Rem870 12ga with a choke suitable to geese and duck hunting.

AK74 .223 (hunting)

Glock 17 9mm (defense)
P232 380Auto (second handgun for defense)
Bersa mod. 23 22lr (low weight ammo, always usefull)

I think I could get along fairly well with five guns I already own.

S&W 629 .44 Magnum with 4" barrel
H&R Model 999 Sportsman .22 Long Rifle with 6" barrel
FN-49 30-06
Marlin Guide Gun 45-70
Remington 870 Express 12ga (I'd have to buy a field barrel as mine only has a 20" smoothbore slug barrel).

If I were going to substitute anything for something I don't already own, I'd probably trade the Marlin for a Browning BAR in .338 Win Mag and leave the FN-49 in favor of my converted Saiga .223.

ok

Out of my current guns.

870 (slugs, bird and buckshot)
marlin 1894c 357
vector ak 47 - I don't currently own a high power rifle, I would get one though.
S&W model 19
marlin 60 22 lr
I guess I would have to carry the 870 with slugs in bear country. We don't have many around here. I'm a dead man I guess, but that bear ain't going to like what my underwear taste like.

A year isn't very long. I could easily bring a year's worth of food with me or bring less and supplement it with hunting, trapping and fishing. I bet I could do it without any guns.

Rifle - For big critters.
Marlin XLR .444 24"

Shotgun - For little critters.
Remington 1100 .410G 27"

Pistol - For stupid critters.
S&W 627 .357M 5"

I spent 21 days afoot in the wilds of AK, lots of cabins out there, many have been torn apart, walls missing ect., by griz/brn bear smelling cooking grease inside;
12ga 870 3.5" mag
10-22
454 or 50 cal handgun
338 mag w 3-9 Leupold scope

So, specifically, how many cabins did you see being torn apart by bears?

I lived in the mountains of Appalachia for a few years and I can tell you cabins fall over all on their own, they don't need any help. Just a winter or two without upkeep and that's all it takes.

A lot of people I know around here have problems with bears breaking into cabins, they aren't easy to keep out. These are usually the ones way out in the middle of nowhere that you need a atv or snowmachine to get to. One interesting thing I've heard is that the grizzlies will go after can of beer, puncture them, and drink the contents.
