    Hornady Die Problems

Having taken up reloading again after a 30+ year hiatus, I finally got my old Rock Chucker press set up and bought two sets of Hornady New Dimension dies for .45-70 and .223, and a can of Hornady One-Shot case lube. I loaded up about 50 .45-70s with no problem, although I was using new unprimed...

    "Ringing" a shotgun shell???

Has anyone ever heard of a practice called "Ringing" a shotgun shell? A letter my wife found in The Backwoodsman magazine asks about it. Apparently it involves "cutting in front of the brass on a shotgun shell lightly so when it is fired that part breaks off from the shell and goes to the...

New Caliber from Cheaper Than Dirt?!!!

Just got my Sep '12 Cheaper Than Dirt catalog, and, while perusing the cover illustration, what did I discover but a brand new caliber! Among the graphics on the cover are a number of cartridge headstamps of various brands and calibers, including a Winchester loading for .308 Rem! After...

    Best Recoil Pad?

I'm in the process of gearing up for more trap and skeet shooting after a long hiatus. I've got a good Morgan pad on my Model 12 trap gun, but none on my 1400 skeet gun, and my wife's 1100 doesn't have a pad on it, either. I've been looking at recoil pads, both slip-on and mounted, and all...

    Shooting my newest oldest gun!

Got to shoot my newest acquisition yesterday, an 1884 Springfield Trapdoor. It has a rifle-length barrel with a new (repro) carbine stock. Metal all in good shape. After three shots from the sandbags, found it shoots just fine. Easily hit man-sized target at 100 yds right off the bat!

Australian Olympic Swimmers in Hot Water over Gun Photos

Apparently a couple of Australian Olympic swimmers training in the US had the temerity to pose with a couple of pistols and shotguns on Facebook. The Australian Olympic Committee, not surprisingly, got their panties in a wad, and demanded they remove them. Full story at...

Would You Carry At A Funeral?

Why not? http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/07/justice/georgia-funeral-shooting/index.html?eref=igoogledmn_topstories Concealed is concealed. I really don't care what people around me would think if they knew I am carrying, because they won't know, unless something like this happens. If it does, I...

Tampa, Charlotte wanting to ban concealed carry during conventions.

Here we go again.... http://www.heartlandconnection.com/news/story.aspx?list=194786&id=747017#.T58nH9l62Sp The Tampa City Council is wanting the mayor to ban concealed weapons during the Republican Convention, under the theory that protesters carrying concealed weapons pose a risk...

NRA to expand lobbying to other conservative causes

Saw a banner on CNN this morning, that the NRA is expanding their lobbying effort to embrace other conservative causes. I, for one, question this decision. The left/Democrats are already characterizing the NRA as a branch of the Republican party. I'm not sure we won't reduce our effectiveness...

Shipping Date for 1st Colt 1871 .44 RFs

I am researching the Wickenburg Massacre, which occurred on 5 Nov 1871. The perpetrators attacking the stagecoach used Henry and Spencer repeating rifles. There were several revolvers among the coach passengers, which included three civilian members of a military expedition. I am assuming...

Madison, WI PD changing weapons due to ammo costs!

The Madison, WI PD is apparently trading in their .45 GAP Glocks for .40 Glocks due to the decreased cost and increased availability of .40 S&W ammo. http://www.waff.com/story/16040239/the-cost-of-bullets-is-changing-things-with-madison-pd I would think if they were doing so for pure...

    Remington Thunderbolt .22LR Quality

Just shot a couple of boxes out of the brick of .22 LR Remington Thunderbolt ammo I bought some time ago. Wish I hadn't. (Bought it, that is!) :( Third time wasn't charm for this round. Experienced 4 failures to fire out of the first box in my Ruger MkIII. Three of them fired with the...

    Title II "Loophole"

Today while waiting for a connecting flight in the Phoenix airport, I heard the talking heads on CNN blathering about a "Title II Loophole" which supposedly allowed the unwashed masses to purchase "high-powered" weapons. Unfortunately the background noise mostly overrode the audio, so all I...

    Confidence in your Carry Piece

I have been looking for a long time for a carry piece I have confidence in. I upgraded my Kel-Tec P-32 to a Ruger LCP, but still consider the .380 ACP marginal for defense, and the trigger-pulls on both weapons detracted seriously from my ability to shoot them accurately. Oh, I can keep all...

    Converting a Kel-Tec PF-9 to "Safe-Action"

I find the PF-9 easy to carry, accurate, and (now) reliable. It isn't, however, easy to shoot accurately, primarily because of the l-o-n-g strong trigger-pull. That got me to thinking (a really dangerous proposition). What if, instead of returning almost completely forward, the hammer were...

    Ammo Prices Going Down???

Was just at my local Mall Wart, and stopped by the ammo case to see how well it was stocked. Had dozens of 100-rd value packs of 9mm, several of .40 and .45 as well. Then I noticed they had a couple of 250-rd value packs of Rem-UMC 115-gr 9mms for $51.97. Then I noticed that the 100-rd WWB 9s...

    Acccuracy of "Factory Second" Ammo

Yesterday I made it to the range to try out some of the "Factory Second" Federal EFMJ ammo I got at CTD for $14.97/50. As you can see, not much, if any difference between it and premium HST! Also, that neither grouped as tightly as non-plus-P target ammo. All groups were fired at 7 yds...

    Factory Second Ammo (?)

While at Cheaper Than Dirt yesterday, I was browsing the .40 S&W ammo, when I ran across dozens of white boxes labeled "Federal 165-gr EFMJ," which they were selling for just shy of $15 per 50-rd box. On the back of the box, though, was a label identifying it as "Factory Second -...
