    Trip report

Had to come to western, VA for a conference and stopped at a coupla gun shops. (Sheesh...Why do they call them gun shops?! They sell firearms, not guns) Okay...Off the soap box. Alleghany Arms in Convington. (1023 S Highlands) Nice shop. Has a good range of used weapons plus sells new Taurus...

    Great day at the range...

The weather finally broke. What a glorious day. There was a lot of stuff that needed to get checked out. I took the Rossi .45LC M92 along. Perhaps you recall that I was having trouble with barrel leading the first time out. A coupla y'all recommended a larger bullet to better engage the...

I love my trapdoor so much....

...I am going to build another one from junk. Some time ago, I came up with a spare breachblock for a trapdoor at a real good price. So I figured, why not buy the rest of the parts and then I'll have two. So I am starting with a barrel which I bought off of ebay for 55.00. The ad listing said...

Finally got into the shop to fix my Geroco .357

This is the revolver I bought in FL and had shipped to VA. Second time I took it out to shoot it, the pivot pin in the hand broke. I also noted that the cam was worn badly though you can't really tell from the following photo. So I made a new pivot pin and installed it in the hand by...

    New addition...

Went to the gunshow in Virginia Beach. Picked up an Uberti Smoke Wagon .357 and 5 1/2 inch barrel NIB for 430.00. The vendor had two of them.

    Some info on wheel weights....

....Not that we need a whole lot of additional comment on the topic. Opening discussion I read Fryxell and Applegate's book on casting bullets. The scientific approach they take prompted me to think in expanded terms. I picked up about 70 pounds of weights yesterday. It was a combination of...

    Hampton Gun show a Bust

Hampton Gunshow was today and will be on again tomorrow. PACKED!! Took longer to find a parking place than it did to drive the 25 miles to the show. Line for tickets was out to the parking lot. I printed my ticket off the internet and I am certain it saved an hour long wait. There are...

Range report including some 45-70 info

I took three firearms with me today. The Geroco .357 Peacemaker, The Rossi .45 LC 1892 carbine, and the 1873 trapdoor. I loaded a .357 RNFP with about 20 grains and got a consistent 730 fps plus or minus about 20. The revolver shoots a bit to the right at 15 yards. I couldn't get to the bottom...

    Made a bullet grabber.....

I think virtually everyone in the western hemisphere but me has figured out how to handle bullets during the lube process. I cast my own bullets and lube them with my own lube for loading black powder cartridges. Problem is trying to figure out how to take the bullets out of the molten lube...

Did Lee change their mold design?

Just purchased a Lee mold for 9 MM through Titan Reloading. I own six or seven other Lee molds and the design of this mold is worlds ahead of the other I own. Three things are apparent which I like. 1. This mold is held onto the handles by use of Allen screws which (I think) can be removed. I...

    Ballistics smart guys....Do I remember....

....seeing a graph of the pressure in a barrel upon discharge? I am speaking of a graph for black powder. Not certain why I want to see this again (if I ever saw it before.) but as I am beginning to load this 45-70 BPCR round, it seems as though at least a casual understanding of barrel...

    Georgia Acquisition

My brother in law lives in St. Marys Georgia. While we were away from home we visited him. He has told me of a good LGS between his house and I-95. So after the visit and on the way back home, I stopped at the shop. He had the Winchester clone I was looking for at a good price. These have...

    Cutting and crowning

I bought a Trapdoor Springfield cadet rifle with a 29 inch barrel. The rifle has the stock cut down to look like a cavalry model. But it sure looks funny with that 29 inch barrel. Because of the shortened stock and a bunch of missing stock hardware the collector value of the rifle is almost nil...

    Picked up a revolver.....

.....while traveling through the back roads of Florida Heading down 301 near Waldo, Fl, my wife, who I thought was dosing, exclaimed, "There is a gunshop". A suite of storage garages had been turned into vendor stalls and one was Kim Andrews Knives and Guns. So we spun around and stopped in...

    45-70 Springfield performance question

As perhaps you might assume, I am going to have to make myself a lot smarter about the capabilities of the 45-70 Springfield. Can one of you experts help here? What I am interested in (at this point) is what kind of accuracy can be expected at 100 yards using an original barrel in perfect...

    Gun show somewhat successful

Went to the Hampton VA Gun show today. Came home with a 45-70 trapdoor. SN 279530. (1885) Rifle stock was cut down but barrel is original length. Bore is good and the rifle operates very smoothly. Finish is in my opinion, I little rough. Many would describe it as having a nice patina. For me...

Good day at the range (mowed field)

Received an Uberti Stoeger .357 Cattleman 7.5 barrel that I bought from GB the other day. The weather cooperated so off to the field I took along a hundred factory loads from Georgia Arms. I think it is better to call these factory reloads. Got a consistent 875 plus or minus 20 fps from...

    Gun Show

Had a nice time at the gun show on Saturday morning even though I did not buy anything. There is a guy who is brining in a good selection of Pietta revolvers, mostly steel frames and he is getting 240.00 to 260.00 for each. These are new in box and those prices are not bad. He does not have...
