    Date the Woodsman

Can someone tell me when my grandfather's Colt Woodsman Match Target was made? Serial is MT123xx Thanks!

    Extremely Dumb Video

Warning: adult language in comments section http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=13138236 Was he trying to hit the car? This one is even dumber than the one of the geeks shooting bottles off their heads, at least those guys were only in danger of killing...

Does This M14 Rear Sight Exist?

I'm in the middle of buying parts for my M14 build, and got to thinking about rear sights (again). I really like my AR's rear sight as it has the option of a small aperture or a larger one for different light conditions. Does anyone make an M14 rear sight like that, where you can switch...

    5.56 in a Colt ".223" Chamber?

Is this a safe combo? The Colt website lists the chambers of their target ARs as ".223". Is it a real .223 chamber (unsafe for milsurp as I understand it) or a 5.56-style deal?

    Metal Saiga-12 Magazines?

Does anyone make them? I like the AGP mags fine, but would prefer something more sturdy, and if possible a little shorter. I'm not really concerned about the extra weight. A US-made beefy metal 8-round Saiga 12 mag would be awesome.

    Heavier EFMJ?

The FMJ carry thread got me thinking of Federal's EFMJ round. I heard they made at least one EFMJ load that used a normal-for-caliber weight projectile, I think it was a 200gr .45acp, but I have never seen it for sale. Do they make an approx 124gr 9mm EFMJ load? Can they? It seems like all the...

Fun With M14 Barrels, Stocks, and Iron Sights

I've been saving up to build my IDE sidestamp Polytech M14 clone into something nice for a while now, and was planning on doing it at minimum expense, but my grandfather passed on last week leaving me some money. I'm going to invest most of it, but I figure he would have liked the idea of me...

    Opening Ammo Cans

I seem to have misplaced my long-handled commie can opener. Do any of y'all have any tips for opening eastbloc tins of ammo without one? Is anyone selling the proper can openers right now without a multi-tin purchase? I've got plenty of ammo for the moment, but I need another opener.

    Should I Buy This Mosin-Nagant?

So I was at the gunshop just now, wandering around gawking, and in a giant crate of badly beaten-up 91-30 M-Ns with gnarly bores I found a 1940 Izhevsk with brass fittings, a bore that looks like it was hand-crafted by Jesus sometime last week, and no import marks. The stock is a little banged...

    Colt HBAR Questions

I think that my next purchase may have to be a Colt HBAR target rifle. Besides the twist rate (1 in 9" vs. 1 in 7") is there any difference between the Match Target Competition and Match Target models? This will be my first 5.56x45mm rifle so I don't know a lot about the chambering. I know a...

    My Slick New Hakan Grips

The speedy and brutally efficient Norwegian postal service is hard at work transporting my new teak 1911 grips to me from that master of the wood, Hakan Pek. The grips that came with my Colt WWI reproduction were ok, but not really my style. When he e-mailed me this photo I nearly keeled over...

    Lapua Speed Ace Discontinued?!?!

I was looking at the Midway website last night hunting for my usual assortment of obscure ammunition and I saw that they had Lapua Speed Ace listed as discontinued! http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=723936 I ordered a whole brick and I could hear a small scream...

    NPR Story on the 1911

I was just driving on the highway, listening to a show called Studio 360 on NPR when in between stories about musicians (it's an arts and music show, I think) I hear something that started out like: "John Browning designed the Government Model of 1911 pistol in..." or something like that. It...

    .455 Webley Prices

I'm thinking of saving up for a .455 Webley next, but I have no idea how much this is going to set me back. I'm guessing the ones not converted to fire .45acp may be out of my price range. I'm also almost totally ignorant of the relative rarity and pricing for the various Mk models. Any info...

    Colt WWI Reproduction 1911

I'm thinking about buying one of these. I've always wanted an old-style Colt and they seem pretty interesting. Anyone have one? How do you like it? The photo on the Colt website is terrible. What does the carbona blue of these pistols actually look like, thin and weird like the photo from the...

    CZ52 Magazines

At the range last weekend one of my CZ52 mags got stuck in the grip some damn way and I had to yank it out with a pair of pliers, bending the heck out of the baseplate in the process. I need to replace it, but I can't find any original milsurp mags for sale anywhere. If any of y'all have a hot...

    Winchester Handgun?

In a case I had to read for my evidence class today a ".38 caliber Winchester handgun" is mentioned. Did Winchester ever make handguns, or is this just another example of a bad description making it into the record because nobody involved knew enough about guns to correct it? The same case...

    M14 Magazine Bandoleer?

I have a blown out disc in my back and a big stack of M14 mags takes my rangebag from a manageable weight into painful territory. I got to thinking that a bandoleer of some type that I could sling over my shoulder as I head for the firing line could be an ok solution. Are there any milsurp...

Grips for a Norinco 54-1 (Tokarev in 9mm)

All-in-all I'm pretty pleased with my new Chinese Tokarev. It's accurate, reliable, and seems to have been put together by somebody who knew what they were doing, but... It has these goofy extra-fat plastic grips on it. Why they would do that to a nice thin pistol is beyond me, but they did...
