    Mika holster for J frame

I returned home after a couple months out of the country to find my new Mika holster in my pile of mail and packages. I'd ordered it while away, and based on postal notifications it was at my house within the week. Anyway, I'd purchased it based on comments I'd read on TFL, comparing it...

Which trigger for a Remington 700?

Jewell or Timney? Which would you install, and why? My .30-06 could use a nicer trigger.

Non-resistance doesn't work in this case...

... as the victim apparently didn't resist, but at the same time had no money to give an armed robber. So the robber shot him in the leg, to make a point. Guess the point is, carry cash next time. Or else, perhaps a gun. The other point is, don't sleep in questionable places...

For those who think home invasions only happen to drug pushers....

... this may be a bit jarring. http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/293122 Not exactly a series of attacks on fellow criminals, in a major metro area. These guys victimized the elderly, young parents with infants, etc in the Roanoke, VA area. The neighborhood may not be a bad one, but bad...

S&W Customer Service, my latest experience

I've been happy with previous experiences with S&W CS, so this time shouldn't have surprised me, and yet it did. I had been looking for an M&P45c, but new ones are just not in the system; I've heard S&W had a major contract tie up most of their recent production, but don't know if that's true...

    Congressional e-mailing lists

So there I was, checking out TFL, with my email in the background... when I received an email at what would be around 0130 back home. Curious, I check my email, to find a congressional mailer, asking if I'd like to be updated via facebook or twitter (neither of which I have, Luddite me) on the...

A little confused about some thread closures

Mods, I don't mean to get in your chili, but lately some threads have been closed for being in "the wrong forum," that I'm not so sure were in the wrong forum. Example: problem with an LC9 trigger pull. Yes, an LC9 is a semi-automatic, but a trigger pull issue, and how to train to use that...

    Turnaround time on Virginia permits?

Quick question: how long is the normal wait for a concealed handgun permit from VA? (Both resident and non-res) We're planning to move there later this year, but I thought I'd get ahead of the process with a non-resident permit application. Has anybody applied recently? If so, what were...

Apex spring kit for J frames

I just installed one. Took about 30 minutes. Reduced a measured 15lbs pull to 9lbs. Need a couple flat-head screwdrivers, a pair of needle nose pliers, a vice-grips and rag, and some grease. Edit: and a paper clip. If I can do it, at least 75% of you can so it. Shop was not my strong suit...

Why are 3-dot sights so popular?

A lot of my pistols have 3-dot setups; most are night sights, a couple are white dots. It never bothered me before I started IDPA recently, but shooting for speed has shown me that 3-dots are about the slowest setup for quick sight alignment, at least for me. I've highlighted the front blades...

    Pleasantly surprised by LC9

Caveat: I only fired a couple rounds through it. I was at the range at my LGS yesterday, shooting and comparing my FNX-9 and SIG P239 9mm for present and fire / double-tap performance; after burning 100rds or so in each pistol, I finished off by shooting my S&W Model 18 .22LR for some DA...

Just bought a Father's Day present...

... for my lady's father. Her parents came down for the weekend for her pinning (just graduated with a second bachelor's, this time an RN/BSN), and her dad went to the range with me yesterday. He liked the K frames he shot, a Model 18 and a Model 65. He also liked the Ahrends finger grooves...

    Anybody used the packin-tee?

I am curious as to how well it stabilizes and secures a weapon; how much if any noise the Velcro makes when the wearer is active; how well it stands up to washing over time. Thanks, M

    What's better than a 3" K frame .357?

Easy: Two 3" K frame .357's. I bought a Model 13 3" a while back. Liked it a lot, but changed to a bobbed hammer. Went through a few sets of stocks before finally deciding I liked the Ahrends round butt cocobolos best for both feel and looks on the blue. I liked my Model 13 so much...

Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Rep. Giffords' surgery and recovery process

Without meaning to be morbid, I found this discussion by Dr. Sanjay Gupta very interesting. It's about dealing with brain swelling, and its after-effects. http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/04/27/gupta-on-giffords-missing-piece-of-skull/?hpt=Sbin Pleased to see that Rep Giffords was cleared...

Dressed up the S&W a bit...

I had a Hogue Bantam grip on my 3" Model 13. It was functional, and looked ok. But then Tom Servo offered me a spare pair of Ahrend's round butt Cocobolo grips for it, so I decided to give them a shot. Luckily I like them, as it turns out, because the Hogue Bantam broke during removal. I've...

    video from Orlando area shootout

Two robbers burst into an internet cafe while a third waited in the getaway car. The two who entered the cafe got into a fight with the security guard almost immediately. Video just made the Orlando Sentinel. Watch how quickly this happens, once the robbers decide to enter the building...

    Another question for Virginia members

Since we may move there later this year, I started looking at handgunlaw.us info on Virginia. Question: What does a concealed handgun permit have to do with permissible rifle magazines? According to handgunlaw.us, a concealed handgun permit holder can carry a rifle magazine which holds more...

Any reliable ways to remove scratches from stainless?

My DW CBOB had a minor cosmetic accident in the gun safe (more accurately, it wasn't as securely in its shelf rack as I had thought it was, when I took my hand off it...); it now has three parallel scratches on the left front end of the slide. While I won't lose any sleep over it, it's still...

    Does Virginia require registration?

Figured some of our VA members would know. My lady is applying for a nurse position at a Virginia hospital; if she gets it, we'll probably move this summer. I've never lived in a state that had firearms registration. I don't know if Virginia does or not. Anybody know? Thanks.
