chubbman: The only arsenal of shells you need for a scattergun in a breakout of society is 00 buckshot & rifled slugs. Uber-cool Whiz-Bang Shells are great for the range, but are nearly worthless when your life is on the line.

I can only really see a use for the flares, at least you could signal that you have a problem.

I know guys that have a few in their hunting vests, so that they can signal in the event that they are injured.

My home has only one easy avenue of approach, and there's no cover or dead spaces on the long, gently-sloping yard.

That being the case, my home-defense plan centers around turning it into a no-man's land with this.

Yes, FFE tells the Arty that they are on target and to begin the actual fires for effect. Effects are brought by the concussion and shrapnel from an artillery round. Unless one has an exploding shotgun shell you will need to aim in order to "fire for effect". "Walking" rounds onto target is called adjust fire in the Arty world. Adjusting fire isn't done very much, except in training, these days. Most of the time a laser range finder/designator in conjunction with a map and compass, as well a terrain card, are used for an immediate FFE. Now if the soldier's laser designator/ range finder is broken, they will resort to the old way of bracketing the target by adjusting fire till they can FFE. This happens with 5 and often less adjusted rounds. Then there are the laser guided artillery rounds, but that is a whole different game. Note, that when adjusting fire there is only one gun firing at the grid coordinates. Once the forward observer is ready to FFE a battery ( 6 guns) or larger unit will all fire.

Ok, back to the subject at hand. The shotgun is a good riot type weapon and has many ways to be used. The main draw back to the shotgun is it's limited capacity. Yes having 7-9 shells in the tube is nice but it is still limited in comparison to an AR carbine. In the case of an AR it can be a burden as it requires one to have multiple magazines to keep it fed properly. I sure wouldn't want to have to load a 30 rounder in a bad situation. The shotgun keeps it simple as you only need the weapon, which has it's mag built into it. The key to the shot gun is that you keep stuffing shells into it as often as you can and never let the mag go dry.

In an urban environment the shot gun can do some pretty useful things that an AR cannot. A solid copper slug will have better penetration than a .223 round, assuming the BG has no body armor. The .223 has trouble with automobiles, shotgun slugs in general don't.

When dealing with large mobs of people it can be very effective by sending more projectiles, with 00 or 000 buck, than a semi-auto AR can in a shorter time frame, provided the user is proficient with the shotgun. Think 9-18 pellets X 5- 10 shells. That amounts to 45-180 projectiles in a rather short time. It is also possible, when done properly and under the correct circumstances , to bounce the pellets off of brick walls and the street. Bouncing these pellets into a crowd will spatter the rounds in a wide pattern giving multiple hits on multiple targets with a few shots and without having to aim at individual targets. For most purposes we are looking to deter the mobs rather than actually kill them. If they are killed that is a bonus for the defenders. I see the shot gun as being the most versatile in comparison to the AR in general.

The AR isn't a bad choice by any means, just that it needs much more equipment in the form of mags , mag carriers, red dot sights for CQB and other things. If the range is more than 100 meters/110 yds. It is best not to engage the target/targets unless they are shooting at you from a long distance. Even though law and order may be in chaos at the time you may have to answer for your "sniping" after the fact. For the most part "street trash" isn't proficient with their weapons and they tend to favor concealable weapons which are short ranged anyway.

The best solution in my mind is a combination of AR and shotgun. This is my answer to the problem of needing longer range capability. YMMV and it is up to you to decide which fills the bill in your individual cases. Just be sure to be good with what you employ and hope to never need them.

Oh... almost forgot. In regards to recoil of the 12 ga. I see a few like the recoil absorbing knoxx products and other types out there. They are a good solution and I will offer that a PAST vest or similar equipment would be a good idea for the more frail, elderly, or small of stature among us.
