Looking to get into long range target shooting. Caliber decision?

I am NOT a long range shooter, but based on extensive research I did when the bug almost bit me, I would choose a 6.5mm cartridge like 6.5-284, .260 Remington, 6.5x55, or 6.5 Creedmoor.

The latest Berger manual has some good stuff about long range shooting.

Consider the ballistic aspects of the bullets to be shot.

How long is long. 300 yards/meters is a real challenge. 600 and 1000 yards test everything.

I like 6.5 and 6mms. I have shot 1000's of .308's up to 600 but prefer the 6.5's. The common ordinary .260 being my pick - easy to make good ammo - lots of available brass (reform 7mm-08 or .243W), good bullets, likes H4350. The .243 loaded with 95's and 105-107 works well but eats barrels.

6.5X47 Lapua brass is non-existent. The 6.5 Creedmore is another consideration being well designed.

Hand loading really helps.

True, the little .223 loaded with 75's & 77's will get out there.
