Do you want a gun you don't need?

I own a .243 and a .270..... great shooters that have taken game..... But I find myself wanting a gun I really don't need...... I am so intrigued!!!

It has really good ballistics, super light recoil, super short action......

My wife and I have a running joke about the $25,000 rifle I want. When she buys something we actually need, I always ask to buy it. I get that look and, "You're cute!" I LIVE for those moments!
Seriously though, I have wanted a rifle in .450 Bushmaster. Ruger makes one I think. I'd also like a Steyr Scout in .308, but I already have a gun in the caliber.

I didn’t need a 45-70, but I bought one. I cast and shoot it a lot at the range. Don’t hunt so why did I need a 45-70. Beats me :)

I have no need for a Tikka T3 in 308, nor do I have a NEED per say for a CZ 527 FS in 308, but I could have a lot of fun with either. Those Tikka actions are just glassy, and they are light and point nice. Of good quality. Etc.

The 527 FS... A controlled round feed action and full length stock.... gun porn. Period.

Short story long.... Yes.

Need has nothing to do with owning firearms, there is very little need to actually owning a firearm for most of us. It is absolutely your right to own as many as you want, and that's reason enough to justify a purchase. As to the 6.5 Grendel rifle you're looking at, I like Howa but hate the Hogue stock.

You're right it won't kill deer better than what you have. It will be a very pleasant rifle to shoot and will take deer as effectively as your .243 and .270. If you can afford it and afford to shoot it, then why not?

Do I want a gun I don't need?????? What kind of question is that? 50 of the guns I own I don't need, I just wanted them.

I find "need" has very little to do with gun ownership. Maybe I need "A" gun for self-defense, all the others are because I want to stimulate the economy and I really like guns. If you only use the 6,5 Grendel to poke holes in paper it doesn't matter. Please post a range report when you get it.

Short answer here is, no.

With the exception of a 1911 and an AR, everything we own serves a purpose. Carry, or match/competition. Also my previous carry (G26) which now makes a nice glovebox pistol.

I would like eventually to get a precision rifle for competition but we're shooting 100yds off-hand iron-sights and it's about marksmanship skills, and until we feel we've exceeded the capability of our current match rifle, not going there.

Talking to "the average joe" they think we're gun nuts but that's not the case at all for those that actually shoot competitively.

Do you want a gun you don't need?

That would apply to about every one of the couple hundred or so I've had during the last 50+ years. :D

Didn't have a NEED, but did want, and have a USE for them.

Life is a funny thing, and provided it goes on (which is where needs come in, things you need to keep living, food, air, shelter, etc) its full of wants, and no matter what it is, with one exception, whatever you want, you can get more of. That one exception is time.

Nobody gets more time. The billionaire and the homeless guy, all of us, from top to bottom we all only get 24 hrs in a day and the days of our lives are finite. Each of us has an expiration date, printed where we cannot read it.

If your family is fed, housed, and clothed well enough to survive, your needs are met, the rest is up to you. We all think we have all the time in the world to acquire our wants....until we find out the hard way that we don't.

If you want it, GET IT! or wait for some future day that may never come. Your call.

Now I am waffling on the Grendel.... Talked to a friend this morning and he is "head over heels" with his new 350 Legend. He's in wild hog country in the south and he is having a blast.

Reason I am thinking hard on the 350 Legend is.... Ammo is crazy abundant right now, when you can't even find 30'06 on the shelf. And... the property we purchased this summer is loaded with Black Bears that are raiding neighbors trash cans and messing with their out buildings. A 350 Legend might be the "Black Bear Medicine" I need, rather than a Grendel.

Since I have a .243 and a .270...... and own nothing above a 30 caliber, except my ..... Rossi 44 Mag Lever....... maybe a 350 Legend is my ticket!!! ??? Mentally, I can justify it better than the Grendel.

We shall see.... I called 6 gun shops within a 100 miles of me.... and have only found 4 guns in stock.... and not really the one I want.

I looked at the .350 Legend. I saw ammo and a rifle or two at Walmart of all places! Ammo and rifle seemed reasonably priced- $26/box and $590 for the rifle. I forget which brand.

That's a tough one, I can't see either one being that effective on hogs for different reasons--but what do I know, I don't hunt them. I have several of each, both the legend and the grendel, and in terms of pure ballistic performance the grendel will out run and shoot more accurately than the legend anytime anywhere. The legend is essentially a 357 max with rebated rim, so if that's your cup of tea--go for it. I know somewhere on here Meheavy who disagrees with everything I say about the legend will certainly disagree with what I say here--I have done a lot of load testing for the legend and I think it's mostly a one trick pony--both my bolt gun and ARs in the legend have performed best with winchester's own 180 gr powerpoint bullet, whether factory ammo or handloads. Unless you live in a PC state I wouldn't give a thought, unless you just really like the idea--in which case I'd just as soon get a lever gun int--seems more at home to me.

Don't NEED anything at all, but have thought an Uberti '73 Winchester (replica) short rifle in .44/40 would be a good one to call the last one in the safe. Hard to find a new one these days for sale. Brass not available it seems lately, either. Doesn't really matter, I'd just probably have it on my lap watching old Westerns these days, anyway... just because.

The .350 Legend give you about 30-30 speed with .30-30 weight bullets and works out of an AR 15.

The .35 Rem has an edge over it, and handles heavier bullets I don't see listed for the .350 Legend. However, the .35 Rem doesn't work in an AR15 or comply with those state's hunting regs that require straight wall cartridges.

Should do well enough for black bear at short range, provided you shoot well and know that the bear's vitals aren't quite where they seem to be because of the "baggy bear suit" they wear. :D

The biggest question with the Legend is the ammo / brass. Its said that its not based on any other case (though the base is .223 size), so, if you're considering it, consider getting a long term supply of ammo (if possible) when you do. .30-30, on the other hand, while may be scarce at the moment, isn't going away, and will come back sooner and be more plentiful than any niche round.
