XD40 or M&P40

you can ignore the safety take down lever and just pull the trigger to take it down. If that is a deal breaker.

I own an XDm 9mm compact and before that had an XD 45 compact. I never found I had to really squeeze the back of the grip to get the safety to disengage. In fact I have it my hand right now and with a loose grip I can still get it to fire.

In terms of shootability and handling of the .40, the M&P 40 wins, and in my opinion it's not even close. Not intended as an insult to XD-40 fans - it IS a good gun - but the M&P feels very smartly designed around the .40

Could you elaborate? Not trying to pick a fight, but you say it's not even close but don't really say in what way.

To me the stock trigger on every M&P I've held and owned has been pretty lousy. Is that a deal breaker? Not really. For minute of man accuracy at standard engagement distances you can make hits with the M&P easy. Now the APEX trigger kit makes it a MUCH nicer trigger, the difference in smoothness and crispness of the break is so night and day its criminal. With that you can turn it into a nail driver. But that means another $100 on the price of the gun. And at that price point...

We get to the XDm, which is my favorite poly striker pistol at this time. The ergos are spot on for me and the pistol is much more refined than the XD. I have an initial range report with my XDm and it was comparing in accuracy to my HKs, I was really impressed. I just find it child's play to shoot easily. Honestly it's well worth the extra $$ to me.

A good bit is subjective - grip was more comfortable to me, controls easier to reach, etc.

I actually found the triggers pretty close to each other. Neither were awesome. The XD's was a bit better but the M&P's wasn't nearly as bad as I'd heard. Maybe my friend got lucky.

Recoil is a big factor. I have shot a large variety of .40 platforms and it's my main round. Some platforms feel intangibly more "shaken" by the round, some less. Ex. I think the Beretta PX4, Sig 229, HK P2000, and M&P master the cartridge, whereas (just a few examples) the XD-40. non-A1 Beretta 96, and older-gen Glock 22s seem a bit less stable around it.

I also thought the M&P felt made with more quality materials, especially the frame.

My impressions are very subjective, and I can't put them on a chart and say the M&P is BETTER than the XD. It was just better to me is all. :)

Another nod to the M&P.

I have owned a M&P9, M&P40, and XD40sc in the past. Although I loved the XD40, I just seemed to shoot the M&P's better. The M&P's interchangeable backstraps is a big plus, and you can opt for the model with no external safety which you can't do with the XD.

Capacity is also a win on the M&P.

One thing I never understood is how people complained about M&P's trigger; its a good trigger. Not the best but also not horrible. The XD trigger is also good, but nothing spectacular. The XDM's trigger is better of course, but we aren't comparing with that.

Also own both, but lean towards my M&P. And personally have never had a problem with any M&P trigger. As far as I'm concerned, all triggers are somewhat differant, it's just a matter of learning and adjusting to each.
Just me, others do not see it this way.

thanks again...I think I have decided on the M&P.....now the fun begins of trying to find one. LGS had one last saturday and it was gone in about 4 hours! He is keeping an eye open for me for another.

Good choice. I own 2 M&P's, an M&P 40 pro and an M&P 40 Shield. I love them both. I also own 4 Glocks. My Glock 23 & 27 are nice little guns as well. I've heard nothing bad about the XD's either. I guess I just like guns... Heck, I have a hard time talking bad about my 15 year old Hi-Point.:eek:
