Why not for home defense? 12 gauge beats .410

One of the things I've always found perplexing about .410/.45 lc combo guns is that both calibers are so expensive and impractical.
I have a spare box of .410 birdshot. I'd probably pattern the gun to see if it was any good for snakes. Then I'd clean it, oil it, throw it in the safe and forget about it.
If I reloaded, it would be fun to develop and pattern loads for it.
