I don't mind buying foreign products when I think they are better. In fact I prefer Austrian pistols, Swiss knives, and Japanese SUV's. Still, I can't say that it doesn't bother me just a bit to see the storied, historic American logo of Springfield Armory on foreign pistols. Just something about that, that doesn't seem right. I do think it was a great marketing move for the new company, and I don't doubt for a minute that many of (at least) first time buyers buy the new Springfield guns, thinking they are descended from the historic American arms manufacture. I probably would have bought one by now, if it weren't for the above.

I buy quality and value regardless of the country of origin. I do avoid subsidising inflated union wages just to buy American. Quality/value. Having said that, I drive a Buick Century (2001) and it's been great. It had been a program car and purchased in 2002 at half the MSRP sticker. Buick is the most desired brand in the New China as are Ford pickups.

I could not ask more of the SA XD9 that I owned. Flawless and will be replacing it with a XDm9 in the next couple of weeks.

Dangerous thinking.

Glad you're not a rocket scientist.
;-)

The US has been the world's biggest manufacturer thru at least 2007. Perhaps China has passed us now. (BTW, biggest exporting nation is Germany.) Let the Chinese buy our jetliners, our computer chips, our coal and we will buy their shirts, grills and toasters. If those 8 out of 10 items were fully made in the US, many people would only be able to buy 3 or 4 of them. Let each country do what it does best.

Wow you're naive!

One of the few reasons Foreign Firearms Mfgs are here in the USA is to sell weapons to the US Gov't and Military. The US Military DOD - DCA -DCASMA Contracts stipulate that firearms, aircraft, nuke, ships and weapons MUST be at least 94% Mfg, Assembled and tested in the USA for USA let and used contracts.

For us old guys, remember when the military decided to go from Colt 1911A1's in .45acp to Beretta 92's in 9mm due to NATO pressure and all the firms that wanted their firearms tested. S&W, HK, Glock, Ruger, Colt, Sig, Browning, Styer and a few others. They all had to open USA Mfg sites, be certified under MIL-Q -9858A, MIL-I-45208A for suppliers and MIL-STD-105D for quality sampling (now all of that is covered under ISO9001 Certification).

Same thing happened for M16 Magazines, Colt and a cpl others lost the contracts and a company called Sanchez Manufacturing moved into the USA kind of quiet like in a small plant in Mansfield Ohio and litterally stole the entire contract for a couple years. Their M16/AR15/M4 magazines are some of the most sought after in the world due to their approach to mfg methods, quality and reliability.

Just being sampled by the military was HUGE advertising for all of these firms and allowed when they failed to get the USA Gov't Contracts or Minimal Spec Op contracts to also make and sell their wares here in the USA.

Then along came free trade (laughs) and everyone felt that somewhat smooth sucking sound. The firearms industry was again turned upside down due to LOW quality, mass produced from other country firearms. It was done quietly for the most part and then all of a sudden you found Brownings made in Japan, Winchesters made in Malaysia, Remingtons made anywhere they were cheapest, Colt to the north, S&W to the south..........then there was Bill Ruger, stead fast he kept chunking out the RST's, Speed Six, Mini14 and Blackhawks. Ruger alone was responsable for bringing the firearms industry back to the USA, you then had Charter, S&W, Colt, Hi-Standard, NAA, Glock, HK, Beretta and a few others revive via newly created companies an almost totally lost industry here.

Now we are seeing the cycle again, with the advent of capatolism in the eastern bloc countries, their low cost of labor and over head even beats China and S. Korea, yet their quality surpasses most expectations anywhere in the world due to ISO9001 & ISO14000 stadardization.

It is now the customer service that has failed. They meaning the foreign and USA made firearms firms are working on the CS and little by little you see it coming back. People just do not want to talk to Pakastanies, Russians and East Indians about their 1911A1, I know I do not.

SO.............what should / would you support? USA traditional firearms being brought back mfg at a lower quality / feature standard and higher cost (does not include custom made at unworldly costs)...or...foreign made firearms at a lower cost and higher quality and feature standard being sold side by side the USA made firearms?

The trend right now is buy foreign (even though made in the USA, Corp is foreign) low cost, get better quality, more features, more gadgets and along with that side.... buy used milsurp low and still get high quality.

I break that trend a lil by buying Para and NAA and Savage. I do buy many foreign Milsurp though and their ammunitions.

The one or two firearm exceptions to the over all rule are the M4 style (all mfgs) and the 1911 & A1 (all mfgs) for USA made and assembled and/or custom made.

Lets not even get into a discussion about fireign Vs USA made ammunition... * ducks and slips out for a coffee

America is a relatively closed economy...only about 14% of GDP is from imports. This means that about 86% of GDP is from the US...granted, most of the smaller, cheaper goods (stuff from Walmart) is made overseas...but most of the really important things are made in the US.

I know that GDP acounts for services as well as goods, but it is a common misconception that most goods that we consume are produced elsewhere.

Just do the research...you'll see.

It's funny you should mention that. Here's some statistics:

China has a minimum standard of 43mpg as of 2009(up from 36mpg). How many US made vehicle comply with that??

Europe has a minimum standard of 40mpg, with a proposed standard of 48.9mpg by 2012.

Japan has a minimum standard of 40mpg, with a proposed standard of 48.9mpg by 2015.

Just for fun:
I had a '71 Honda Z Coupe that used to get 60 mpg on the highway. Made in Japan. (Read that again a car from almost 40 years ago, that got 60 mpg.)

Step forward to a '95 Ford Aspire that still gets 45 mpg on the highway. Made in South Korea.

We came ahead 24 years and lost 15 mpg.

My Aspire gets overall better mileage than my sister's Toyota Prius. And that car is newer still by more than a decade over the Aspire.

Look at the advances in almost all other fields, take computers for example, and tell me why I am seeing this?

I also used to have a stage two race engine (street legal) MGB that got 42 mpg on the highway, even at slightly above the national average posted speed limit. (Good thing Montana used to have a "reasonable and prudent" speed limit.)

And just a couple of years ago at the Alaska State Fair they had a new Corvette. They boasted that it was the fastest, quickest accelerating, highest top end, most horsepower, and best gas mileage of any 'Vette ever made. (Current fuel rating is 26 mpg highway for base model.) Go figure!

The Chinese took our idea and improved it... and now they do it better

The Chinese can COPY anything ... they have not come up with an original idea since Kung Fu...:D

One of my son's friends works at a company who's quality manager came from another company with HQ in China...

He told us that they did a "quality summit" what ever that is... and they had the originals and then the china copy next to it... and he said you can not tell them apart. Automobiles, clothes, firearms, shoes, etc...

He said that companies are going there to save money in the short term but are getting everything from processes to designs stolen and copied...

How long do you think you would stay in business if your design was copied and sold for 1/3 of the price...?

We came ahead 24 years and lost 15 mpg.

This is simply mass to inertia ratio... bigger cars take more gas than smaller cars to move much more mass...

These cars that go 40+ miles to the gallon are tiny compared to the ol escalade out in the driveway...

We're losing jobs because of socialism, Made in America should be cheaper: we should not have minimum wage and child labor should be allowed; then bam everyone wins, poverty disappears and we all get Chinese prices.

Our government makes it very difficult to buy USA with all the regulations stamped on the markets.

This thread should be closed

Take a class in economics instead of giving me anecdotal evidence...add up the value of everything that you own made in the U.S. and then divide that by the total value of everything that you own. Tell me what percentage you get. This should keep you busy for a little while.

I completely understand what you are saying and I also would like more of our products made here in the U.S...but from an economics perspective, it is not as bad as portrayed by some.

Somewhere along the line, we went from the subject of the XD being made in Croatia to yakking about the worldwide auto industry.

This one's closed.
