M1a is a bit problematic in that area because of the dog leg op rod. The ol' "Garand bent op rod syndrome" must be taken into account.;)
Maybe you can replicate the feel though if not the ballistics. Light (125 gr or so bullet) & a minimum effective powder charge that cycles the action might give the effect you're looking for in a different way?

The M14 does not suffer from the Garand bent op rod syndrome in either degree or frequency. The differences in the M14 gas system limit the risk, and the damage.

However, you certainly CAN overstress the action particularly with heavier than usual bullets and loads.
 
May have to open up the gas port to allow more gas in. Might also have to cut some coils off the op rod spring to reduce its resistance to opening. Final step would be modify the helix in the op rod to allow for quicker opening.
