Check the hunting regulations some states imply barrel lengths & power factors for hunting .

In NC we can hunt with a center fire handgun of larger than .24 caliber (no barrel restrictions)Small game with 22lr must have 5 1/2" barrel or longer.
No power factors.

I'm the OP on this thread and Y'all have been so supportive, that I'm considering buying one for myself. I have four spotted, locally, used and new. Years ago, I had a 4" and was not too happy with the trigger. Another shooting buddy, had a trigger job done on a 6" and it was excellent. It not only felt good, it shot great. The 6" is for hunting and the .357 is for using .38, for home defense. If it was strickly for home defense, I would have recommended the 686 in 4", He definitely wants a revolver. .......
