What the L? So then what about the L prefix, as in L6? <---IIRC L6 is rusty stuff.

H harrydog New member Feb 24, 2002 #42 C.R.Sam, I know that Bar-Sto uses 416 stainless that is heat treated to 180,000 PSI tensile strength. I have no idea how that compares to 4340, etc.

C C.R.Sam New member Feb 24, 2002 #43 Ruger uses 410 for their castings with the exception of their .480. At equal levels of hardness, 4340 demonstrates a bit more tensile strength and a significant increase in yield strength. Most stainless (4XX included) max hardness is about Rc 46. 4340 can be used at max Rc 60. 4340 parts I furnished for M-19 40mm machine gun were hardened to 53-55 Rc per spec. Sam
