Pick one caliber between .223 and .30-06

Since you ruled out .223 and .308, either 5.56X45mm or 7.62X51mm.

Seriously now, .303 British, I'm a big fan of the Enfield platform.

Hmmmm are we picking a caliber or cartridge between the 223 and 30-06?

If we're picking a caliber? 284 or 7mm caliber for my favorite hunting rifle cartridge 7mm rem mag.Now if we're picking a cartridge between the 223 and 30-06? I'll go with the 280 remington.

Realizing you meant 'cartridge' and not 'caliber', I'd go with 7mm Rem Mag. I can load it from 7x57 velocities up to factory specs. It'll do anything a .243, 6.5x55, .270 or 7-08 will do. Felt recoil, to me at least, is no different than a .308, 30-06 or .270.

I really like the choices with way more energy than a .30-06. I believe the most useful responses would be something more than 1,300 ft lbs and less than 3,000 ft lbs - .300 mag really?

If I had to give up my old 30-06 and that would be hard. I guess my old SAKO 270 would just have to take up the slack. ken

25 06 would be a great choice. With over 2300 ft lbs of energy, it's a flat shoot hard hitting round.

.270 WIN packs 4-500 more ft/lbs, shoots flatter longer (better BC's) and is cheaper because it is available everywhere, usually in several flavors.... .280 would be better, except for that last thing.

If you like it great, but say you like it just because you like it.

In 1952 I purchased a Winchester Mdl 70 270 and started reloading ammo for it in 1953. I have killed pronghorn ,mule deer, elk, varmints and some unwonted critters with may old rifle. Over the years I have killed deer with a 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem, 264 Win Mag, 270 Win, and 308 Norma Mag. It was fun trying out the different cartridges but all I needed was that old 270.

Either another 223 or another 30/06. Or both.
A light and a heavy 223 (or an AR and a bolt) and a light and a heavy '06.
Different scopes, maybe different loads.
