I'm getting old and the saying is that all things go in circles, and it must be true. When I was younger the more powerful, the better. That included scopes and all the other hunting junk we "needed". Lately, I have gone backwards. Hunted this year with my .22 Hi-Power, no scope. Got a deer. I suspect the best deer cartridge is whatever you use at that point in time.

30-06 and I've never had to put more than 1 bullet in an deer. All one shot, one kill.
