Another vote for a peep sight. Do some searching on the web, there is an outfit that sells a period looking peep called the Johnson peep that would not look out of place on your rifle. Another option is to consider the sights offered by Skinner Sights, they make a simple stemmed peep called the Lo-Pro that would be very minimalistic, as well as larger versions too. You may likely have to install a front sight of a different height to obtain zero with a peep.
My eyes started to slip about age 50, ,giving me trouble with handguns and rifle bead and blades like on lever carbines. Installing peeps on really helped. At 63, I can still shoot long barrel peeps like on the Garand, OK enough to still enjoy them.
