If you start hitting gunshows, sooner or later you'll find a decent milsurp/sporterized bolt goin in your price range. The other option is pawnshops/gunshop consignment racks. I just sold a really nice (gunshow $127) Russian MN91/30 + all accessories, because I picked up a beautiful Polish MN M44 for $90 (made an offer to a consignment owner). I'm sure the same deals are out there for the other bolts mentioned....homework & patience helps. It's not that I didn't like the MN91/30. I have limited room and I love the MN44...both are very accurate....for what they are.

I don't really find too many great deals at gun shows...at least that's how i've observed it to be here in AZ. I think they are great for certain accessories, maybe even ammo. But as far as firearms...I dunno...I have yet to see a great deal.
For the OP...I would agree with the Mausers...there are sooo many variations that you can get if you are inclined to do so.
I will also agree 100% with Zombie...and give my vote to a K31 Swiss. Great surplus rifles!...and you can get one for about 2-3x the price of a MN...just keep in mind that you won't be feeding it quite as cheaply as you do a MN. It's gonna be more like 0.52-0.55 cents per round for the Swiss 7.5 round.

I'll second this. It's called the Ishapore 2A1, it carries 12 shots of .308, has a 24 inch barrel, and is a damn sweet rifle. Mind you that's coming from a guy like me who is not a big fan of bolt-actions.
Yes, it's heavy, but you can get an aftermarket fiberglass stock that would eliminate that problem by letting you get rid of the heavy steel nosecap and other unneeded parts.

I'll vote for the Yugo M48 series in 8MM. A good sturdy bolt action.

The Yugo 24 47 is an excelent rifle that can be had very reasonably.
The only thing I would recomend for these, is that you order a taller front sight, as they do shoot high with the factory front sight.
There is another version of the Mosin, thats extreemly nice, its the M-39.

Classic arms has had some good deals on British 303 rifles. about $200.
And you can find a Braziilan Mauser usualy for less than $150.

Yeah, it seems everything but the No4's are getting harder to find in good shape.
To the OP, you can usually find SMLEs that have been sportered out by the likes of Parker Hale, Santa Fe, etc for well under $300. They make great hunting rifles, but they don't exactly have the military look any more. You can also find repros of the Jungle Carbines very inexpensively.

Not as much as I used to, but they are out there. Ammo is rare new Norma $$$, good news is cases can be fireformed from 30.06, reloading is the same diameter as .303 or 7.62X 54

I too have mosin nagants and Swedes - My Finnish mosins can keep up with Swedes easily. I have 5 M39's and all are 1.5 MOA or better. They typical Soviet mosin is a 3-4 MOA rifle.

+1 on the M39. I scored a nice one in the bargain bin at the pawnshop for. $150. Its a real shooter!! They have a k31 over there but they want $350 for it. I'll let it sit awhile and offer 250.
