Looking for a good .45 ACP for home defense

Alright, I think that I've narrowed my choices down between the HK USP full size and the Sig 220. I like them both, have shot both, but don't have the cash for both, at least not now. Being as I live in the state of MD and both of these guns are in jeapardy of being taken off of the "socialist approved politically correct firearms roster," which one do you think will be the better choice? I'm leaning towards the HK because of the higher magazine capacity.

I would say Glock 21 or Sig 220. For home protection, I would try to avoid one with a manual safety because for home protection, you may end up having to use it under pressure with minimal response time and you don't want to find out the safety is on as you may not undo the safety in time.

Jim,

I prefer a manual safety on my house gun simply because I feel like I need some barriers between myself and a fully loaded weapon.

Sleepwalking escapades in my youth have scared me away from having a fully loaded firearm with no manual safety near my bed at night.

I do have one nearby (not within arms reach), but it has a manual safety.

My vote is for the SIG P220. In my opinion price is not a factor when your life is on the line. In a few years you will probably forget exactly what you paid for it, but will love it each time you pick it up.

here is my .02cents, most all .45 auto you will look at are very relieable out of the box, and with every thing mechanical,it will have its failures at the most inconvenient times, but its the human failures that you need to look at, practice, practice, practice, and more practice. and practice good habits, because in a stessfull situation your actions will be how you practiced.

if you have a range in your town or area that allows you to shoot a demo gun that would help, or get a friend that will let you shoot his. all the weapons listed are very good and check out the Para-ordnance 45's also. both in DA (double action) & SA (single action)

.45 auto's are a great weapon of choice for defence and offensive application. but dont forget the .45 acp or long colt revolvers very simple and very relieable.

good luck and good shooting

Yes,they can run,but they are going to die tired,USMC1966-72;)

A lot of this decision comes down to what you shoot best, so the standard advice is to try several rental .45s before you buy.

For in-home defense, the only major issue I can see with a 1911 or Ruger is that they do not have a rail to mount a white light. It's important to know what you're shooting at in a dark house. IMHO the best .45 choices with a light rail are the H&K USP, the big Glock, and the SIG P220 ST.

Well i have a Ruger P-90 that has served as a house gun for quite some time. they are easy to shoot, easy to maintain, stone cold reliable, can withstand alot of abuse/neglect and very accurate and has a relatively low price tag.
