Ken Waters once recommended as a "pet load" for revolvers stout loads of 2400 in the .44-40. I loaded some up for Dad's Uberti SAA replica. I heard about those loads for perhaps ten years, as they barked about like a magnum. No damage done, but way, way uncomfortable in a SAA clone:eek:

I have played around with both new Unique and AA#5 for mid-range loads in the .44 mag, say a 200 gr at 1200 fps. I figure this would be a good defensive load in a 5" Smith. I haven't yet really found a combo that suits me.

I think some of the slower powders, like Blue Dot or similar burn rates would be good for these applications.

For full tilt loads in the .44, I really, really like Hodgdon Lil'Gun, which also works like a charm in my .22 Hornet rifle:D
