I've been trying like heck for awhile to get my grandfathers 38 carbine up and running. Everything but the bolt is good to go. (Missing the internals). Bought 2 complete bolts on eBay and For 1 reason or another none of them worked. The firing pins I bought didn't fit in the original bolt. very frustrating and not cheap.
Any ideas on what my next course of action should be?

Take some pictures of the bolts, safeties, and firing pins and post them up. I'm sure someone could help.

^^^^Yeah, something wrong there. The two types of pins will usually interchange with out any grinding or filing if you use the correct safety. They can be a little difficult to get together if you are new at it. Maybe that's all it is. Try to get some pictures up.*****You can put the wrong bolt in the 6.5 and it will turn and lock. This is DANGEROUS.

Type 99's with mum, bolt, bottom metal, what are these valued at?

Not that much. The wood usually brings more than a bare rifle.

I customized this type 99 - 7.7x58 Jap some years ago.

Killed several deer and hogs with it, but never did like the safety.
I traded it so wouldn't be passed down in the family.

I think that since, Timney offers a drop-in trigger with a safety now.

They probably do. I used to pick up the odd gun or action that had a replacement trigger, but I don't recall who made them. Thinking back, they sure looked like Timney triggers. I never cared for the after market triggers for a hunting rifle. They have a bad habit of letting the bolt pop open at the most inopportune times. I actually ran into a few guys that kept the bolt in place with a rubber band when hunting with a rifle that did not lock the bolt shut in the safe position. Whatever. Depends on your hunting style, I guess.

Have used 2 Timneys, a Bold, a Jewel and even 1 Huber triggers in builds.
Never had problems - All were much better than the originals.

Any way you can show us a pic or check/ID that trigger manufacturer.
What your describing sounds terrible and certainly to be avoided.
Only thing I've can imagine, that old Rem/Walker trigger looks similar to a some Timneys - The size is the same and the screws are in the same place.
As many Rem rifles that were made, figure a lot of those triggers found a second life in Bubba fixed rifles.

Maybe I will poke around later tonight. I may still have one. It really does not matter who made it, Timney triggers have nothing to hold the bolt closed once cocked. It is really annoying when you have it slung on your shoulder.

I have decided to stuff these parts under my loading bench, so that in a year or 2, I can ask myself where the hell did they go.
I figured maybe more responses to an add I took out, tryong to sell off these parts but the interest for Arisakas is fickle at best.
Perfect scenario would be some chap wanting to trade me a Mauser for all of it......
