Anyone useing 2230 for .223 loads?

AA2230 is my powder of choice in my Tikka T3 lite having outperformed H335, BLC-2, Benchmark and Varget with my 52 gr. and 63 gr. bullet loads in a 1 in 8 twist barrel . Hope this helps .

Hey Dbar,

No problem with me. Can you all tell me something though? From what I described in my earlier posts, does my Colt AR-15 have a 20 inch barrel as I think, or is it a 24 inch barrel as Dbar has made me doubtful of my memory? I hate getting old.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

David,

Your Colt should have a 20" barrel if it's still in it's orginal factory configuration. A lot of loading data on the .223 is printed with "varmint" rifles in mind. Most guys that shoot prarie dogs with the .223, do it with the light bullets, and longer barrels. They also usually have a 1/12, or 1/9 twist rate in the barrel. Yours is either a 1/9, or a 1/7 twist rate, which is good for projectile weights from 55 to 77 gns, or higher. You could also get away with lighter than 55gn bullets, especially if it's a 1/9 twist. Your twist rate should be stamped on the barrel under the handguards, but I wouldn't worry about it if I where you.

Hey Dbar,

Yes, it is original, and I am glad to hear I was correct in thinking it was 20 inches.

Best wishes,

I haven't worked up to your load. I've tried 23gns of AA2230 with decent results (wish I had a chronograph), and I've got a few loaded at 23.5, and 23.8 for the morning.

Your load looks to be over max?

Are you getting any signs of over pressure at 25gns of AA2230?

Thanks,
DBAR

The 25 grains is under the max load in Sierra's book.

Actually it's just 1/10th over a "max" load suggested by Sierra.

they guide you with <<23.5 - 24.9>> as the recomended load range.

23 grains is going 2700+ FPS
25 grains is going 2900+ FPS

This book reads very conservative in their data. Safe but conservative.

I trust Sierra's data more. as it includes a reference to FMJ bullets as well as SP's and HP's

With this powder the pressure signs started for me at max load of 25.3 Flat primers.
