"It's the mother, who made the original 911 call that got officer's out there that might not have let them know what he had and how f'd up his mindset was that may or may not share some blame."

I just saw this on Yahoo while checking the stock market prices.

The 911 operator did NOT tell police about the weapons. John

"PITTSBURGH – The mother of a man charged with killing three Pittsburgh police officers told a 911 dispatcher he had weapons, but the dispatcher didn't relay that information to officers, the official in charge of county dispatchers says.

The dispatcher should have asked more questions about the weapons, but didn't, and certainly should have told officers so they could take necessary precautions, Allegheny County Chief of Emergency Services Robert Full told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"There is no excuse. It could have been handled better, without a doubt," Full said in Tuesday's editions."

What both countries need is a system to effectively prevent criminals from getting guns. And it needs to be a cooperative effort from both the Canadian and US government to be effective.

Well, Canada was all hot to trot to get total gun registration. This was a way they were going to cut down on crime in Canada. It was sold as an idea that would not cost a lot of money and would help to solve crimes. In the end it cost over a billion dollars, the compliance rate was only about 70%, and apparently it did nothing to help reduce crime because the Mayor of Toronto now wants a total ban on handguns because crime in Toronto has become too high, according to him. So, is registration a failure with respect to solving and reducing violent crime in Canada? Has the cost been worth the effort? It doesn't sound as if it's been worth the cost from what I've read.

One of the best ways to keep criminals from getting guns is to keep them in prison and not let them out amongst the people if they have violent criminal histories. I believe both of our countries put too much stock in the ability to rehabilitate violent criminals and sexual predators. Of course, it costs more to lock up violent criminals for longer periods of time than it does to register guns, so the politicians take the easy route and blame the guns.

Ladies and gents, we have eight or nine threads open on the general subject of the recent string of shootings and the probable reaction from those that would infringe on the rights of law abidering gun owners.

There is a thread on Nancy Pelosi's interview on a major television network today, here. Let's continue the discussion there.
