My favorite is Varget in a mini 14 Target ranch. Looks to be hard to overload with any bullet weight. I'm shooting 55, 60 and 69 grain bullets with compressed loads, no problems and excellent accuracy.

H335 is best for my 700 Varmint

Try 31.0 grains of H335 with 55 grain flat base bullet. My 700 Varmint will print a 1/2-3/4 inch group at 100 yds with this load. Not knowing condition of your rifle, try 10% lower load to insure safety.

31 grns of 335 is a pretty hot load, I'd back off a bit.

Assuming your 4895 is good, then you have primer problems if its not burning completely.

I'll load R-15 in my AR service rifle for High Power (heavy bullets), and 335 with lighter bullets for my Bolt guns and 55 and under for my ARs.

I wont recommend a load or primer, All guns are differant, you need to work up your loads for your gun, watching for pressure signs and accuracy.

Still 31 grns of 335 is pretty hot. I never seen a reloading manuel that recommended that powder charge for any 223 bullet. But hey, its not my gun.

The .223s I own work well with H335 , H322 , Benchmark , and VV N-133. The 31 grain H335 listed above is FAR BEYOND the max load listed in my Hornady manual for 55 grain bullets.

Depending upon the bullet weight H-322 or H-335 is about as good as it gets. If you're shooting matches and want to win-- N-133 or N-135 --and again depending upon bullet weight, N-540 IS as good as it gets.

I think there is a disclaimer you are supposed to post when you go that hot. Dude you are 5 grains over max. If you really shoot that load out of your own gun like you say, good luck.
Disco always check information you get on the interweb against a manual for safety including any info I might give you. I'm hoping 31 grains was a type-o. I have never used the powder you mentioned. I have been very happy with W748 and H335.

What bullet are you using. Speer shows 23.5 grain starting load for a 55 grain FMJ-BT and 25.5 max compressed.

31 rg of H335 WOW! Hot! Hot. The ref. I have says 28.5 is max for a 5.56 with a 55 gr pill, and we all know that is way hot for a 223.

In smokem's defense, I happen to know that he purchased a Rem 700 off this board in .243 Win. So, I'm guessing he misread the OP and listed a 243 load with a 55 grain bullet and H335 rather than a 223 load, which is an honest mistake. That's why you always check data against listed loads in manuals, right?:D

Any powder that both meters and performs as well as W748 is a great powder. While you're searching for such a powder, may I suggest you just use 748?:D

I am using IMR 4895 in my 223's without any powder left. Are you using IMR 4895 or H4895? What primers are you using?
