Recycled Factory Bullet Cores Effectiveness for Defensive/Woods Bullet?

The local shooting range recycles the factory lead cores of the bullets they collect, there. It is plentiful, $1.35 per pound, and seems to cast acceptable bullets for low velocity shooting (.38 Special, .45 Colt). My questions are: 1) Does water-quenching/cooling this mix of lead cores offer...

    Lee 452-255-RF @ 270 gr @ 1,200FPS

This bullet, cast with clip-on wheel weights @ 270 grains, water quenched and moving at 1,200 FPS...where would you draw the line at in using this for backcountry defense (under 30 yards)? What animals start to be out of it's league in terms of defense (NOT hunting)? Thanks

    Ruger Security-Six .357 Magnum...Should it be retired?

I Am Weak :-( Today, I dropped into a local pawn shop that I frequent. Instantly, my eyes noticed a 1980 produced Ruger Police Service-Six in the glass case. And, I bought it. The bluing has worn thin in some areas but it was clearly due to holster wear and not abuse. There is very little...

    Ruger Security-Six .357 Magnum...Should it be retired?

My daughter spends a lot of time in the mountains of Utah and wanted a gun to carry while she was out hiking and/or camping. I offered her my S&W 629 .44 Magnum. And, even though she could shoot it the grip frame is a bit large for her hands (she is barely 5' 3"). I have an early 1980's...

Ruger SRH Alaskan .454 Casull---Tightest Grouping??

For those who have experience with the Ruger SRH Alaskan in .454 Casull: 1) What is the tightest group you have shot to date with this gun? 2) What was the distance to the target? 3) What was the ammunition used? 4) If it was a handload what was the recipe? Thanks

HS-6 vs Unique in .45 Colt Perceived Recoil

In an article http://www.handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=12, John Linebaugh indicated one of the loads he used for his S&W 25-5 in .45 Colt is 13 grains of HS-6, a 260 grain Keith boolit, for a velocity of 925 FPS. In my S&W 625 .45 Colt I am loading 9 grains of Unique, a 270 grain RFN...

    Help Identifying .38 Special Headstamp

Picture of Brass The brass was very tarnished. But, a night in a home-brew solution cleaned it right up.

    Help Identifying .38 Special Headstamp

I bought 1,700 .38 Special brass for a total of $20. It appears to be once fired (judging from the red sealant still around the primer). Very nice looking brass. But, I don't recognize the headstamp. R A 6 7 Can anyone identify it? Thanks

    S&W 625-3 .45 Colt...Durability?

I have a S&W 625-3 in .45 Colt with a 4" barrel. It was manufactured in 1989. The timing is just right and the lock-up is solid. I have heard to NOT shoot hot loads in these guns, which I won't. QUESTION: Can this gun handle a steady diet of 270 grain cast bullets at 900 FPS? Thanks

S&W 625-5 in .45 Colt... .454 Casull Fit in Cylinder???

DPris Are you really that tired or just lack professional tact? It may not be there to headspace the brass but, that internal "step" prevents more powerful rounds from being loaded into and fired from weaker guns. An example would be .357 Magnum in a .38 Special revolver. While that could be...

S&W 625-5 in .45 Colt... .454 Casull Fit in Cylinder???

Is something wrong here? I thought all revolvers which shared sister calibers but are "weaker" rounds like .38 Special, .44 Special, .45 Colt had cylinder chambers cut so the more powerful rounds like .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .454 Casull could not be loaded into them. I have a 1989 production...

    Virginian Dragoon .44 Magnum---Is $400 too much?

Please look at the pictures of this Virginian Dragoon .44 Magnum manufactured in 1977 or 1978. It is in really good mechanical shape. Everything seems solid. Slight blue wearing from a holster. Is $400 too much to pay for this revolver?

Light Load .454 Casull and Small Pistol/Magnum Small Pistol Primers??

UPDATE UPDATE: Today, I loaded up some .454 Casull, 270 grain RFN boolits, 11 grains Unique, using a Small Pistol Primer. The average velocity recorded was 1,002 FPS. Grouping was better than what I have shot with this same bullet and powder charge, before. One of the targets is posted below...

Light Load .454 Casull and Small Pistol/Magnum Small Pistol Primers??

In stead of using small rifle primers with light .454 Casull loads, say 10 or 11 grains of Unique and 265 grain cast bullets, can a small pistol or magnum small pistol primer be used? Just wondering. Thanks

7.5 grains Green Dot, 250 grain Cast Bullet, S&W 625

Is 7.5 grains of Green Dot, behind a 250 grain cast boolit too much for a .45 Colt S&W 625? Thanks

Ruger SRH Alaskan .454 Casull -OR- S&W 625-5 .45 Colt......Which one to keep?

Alasakan .454 Casull Target at 20 Yards As you can tell, I am NOT a great shot. But, at 20 yards the 2.5" barrel Alaskan is not difficult to hit a target with. This was shot at a 6 O'clock position, 274 gr RFN cast bullet averaging 1,235 FPS, standing non-support, double-action (09-13-2013)...

Ruger SRH Alaskan .454 Casull -OR- S&W 625-5 .45 Colt......Which one to keep?

Poindexter Poindexter, A few years ago, I had the chance to talk several times on the phone with Mr. Linebaugh. I was inquiring about which big bore caliber to invest in for the purposes I had in mind. I was sold on the .45 Colt. By the way, he is a very nice person. I purchased a 4" Ruger...

Ruger SRH Alaskan .454 Casull -OR- S&W 625-5 .45 Colt......Which one to keep?

I own both of the guns listed in the title. They are awesome guns and in beautiful condition. The S&W is a 1989 pre-lock production. Niether of them are for hunting but rather for woods/mountain defense. The Alaskan has a 2.58" barrel and the S&W has a 4" barrel. Because I hand load, I can do...

.38 Special In The Utah Mountains...Trail Gun??

A Utah friend of mine called to ask about using a .38 Special with a 4" barrel as a trail gun and a defensive gun in the mountains of his home state. He has 158 grain, cast SWC and SJSP flat point, +P ammuntion that are showing 890 FPS muzzle velocity on the boxes. I recommended getting a .357...
