I will soon be receiving my first custon 1911, and was thinking of trying out IDPA, isntead of just plinking away at the range by myself. Anybody know where I could hook up with a group in or near silicon valley, ca.?

I've been reading a lot of posyts recently that describe the .38 super as being less recoil than a .45, straighter shooting, more accurate, the balistics of a .357, and one extra in the magazine. If all this were true, I'd expect this to be a very popular cartridge for LEOs, self defense, etc...

Is there a short barrel length for the 9 mm beyond which it starts to loose significant power? I know that for .45 auto, shorter than ~4 inches, and velocity starts to degrade pretty rapidly.

I have never had a problem with this, other than wearing off after time, but I don't carry, and don't live in a humid climate. Never the less, I keep leaning towards stainless or hard chrome in a new gun because of concerns about rust. Not sure if these are realistic or not. Has anybody had...

I ordered my new 1911 with a full length guide rod, my reasoning being that the extra weight up front would be better. But, a regular guide rod allows a one handed press cocking of the gun, whereas the full length does not, I believe. So I'm rethinking whether a full length guide rod is best...

I'm thinking about trading in my Walther .380 on a 9mm, but want the minimum increment in size. What do folks recommend? The Walther is german-made and a really excelelnt gun. I wouldn't want to give up anything in quality. canuck1911
