    Which bore sighter works?

After reading positive reviews, I went and bought a Leupold Zero Point and I'm not convinced it's the easiest thing to use. My main issue is there's no positive way to center it width-wise at the end of the muzzle (magnet holds it). I'll probably return it in favor of something else but I had...

Burris Signature rings - you guys were right!

Based on the recommendations from this forum, I researched the Signature rings and decided to order a set to mount my new Swarovski onto my new T/C muzzleloader. The concept with the polymer inserts just makes so my sense. Actually since my Ultra Slug mount was too high, I ordered a Signature...

What's the benefit of a fluted barrel

Other than the obvious such as less weight (not sure what percent), I've read that they would cool down quicker as well (??). But looking at mine, I would think it would strengthen the barrel as well maintaining POI as the barrel warms up. Are there any other benefits? Thanks.

    Removing rear sight

I bought a Remington Model 5 .22 last year and just replaced the rings today to bring the scope down closer to the barrel. But the rear sight is in the way and I can't get the scope cover past the rear sight. It looks like there's mounting screws to remove the base but I think I have to knock...

Burris Sig rings and centering a scope

I have some Burris Sig rings on order and I've watched the video on Burris's website about installation and the use of the offset inserts if needed. Basically they said to mount the scope, shoot it at a target (don't recall the specified distance), and based on the amount and direction it...

Can you dull down a gloss base?

I'm going to install matte Burris Zee Signature rings on my next project but the only model black base from Burris is gloss (and silver). The only other matte base I've found is a Leupold and I'm not a big Leupold fan. I may order both bases but if I want to dull down the gloss Burris, is there...

How do you align windage on the 1 piece bases?

In order to use some certain scope rings, I'll have to use the 1-piece base type with the front turn-in dovetail and rear double windage screws. Can these be aligned by eye or do you need the scope alignment bars/rods to do so? Thanks.

Proper installation of dove tail rings

I've seen a slotted type wrench used to install dove tail rings, a taped up Cresent wrench, and a "scope bar" - (rod, pipe, dowel, whatever). If a scope bar is used, I assume it's ok to tighten it down in the ring and then turn the ring into the base? I'm sure some has used their scope but I...

Turkey scope options for Winchester 1300

I have a Winchester 1300 shotgun that has the old Weaver side mount with 1" scope rings. I'd like to put some type of scope on it for my older brother to use during turkey season. With the 1" rings, I'm limited to 1" tube red dot scopes and their FoV are rather narrow. I could remove the Weaver...

    Question on Leupold QR rings/base

I'm debating whether to go with fixed or some type of quick detachable ring setup on my next firearm. I saw the Leupold QR base and rings the other day, and besides the advertised hype, I was wondering just how good these are for returning to zero? And how easy is it to turn the levers in the...

For Swarovski scope owners . .

I just got a new Swarovski AV3-9x36 and was wondering what finish scope rings to get? The scope is suppose to be a matte finish but it's more of a black stipple finish and I think matte rings will be too dull. Some ring manufactures off a "black" ring which I would think is between matte and...

Saddle type mount for Winchester 1300?

I have a Winchester model 1300 turkey gun with the old Weaver 1" side mount and I would like to install a Red Dot scope on it this spring for my brother. Most of the Red Dots have 30mm rings so I'd have to remove my Weaver base and install one of the Millett/B-Square saddle type bases. Are any...

What purpose do the QR rings serve?

If someone wants to remove their scope, the regular rings will perform the same function with the right screwdriver blade. And when you reinstall them, I would think it would be best to use a Wheeler torque wrench or something to get the same tightness rather than just turning the lever until...

    Touching up with Aluminum Black

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. I was sitting on stand this morning and as it got light, I noticed the top of my scope's bell was all scratched up from carrying it too close to my chair that morning. Just wonder for those that have used Birchwood Casey's Aluminum Black, after...

    Question about scope ring designs

There are two major scope rings designs that I see and I'm wondering if one is better than the other? Take a Burris Zee rings for example, where the top half is secured to the bottom half with screws at both sides. Then the Warne type where the ring is tighten at the top only. It would seem...

    Aluminum versus steel scope base

I plan to mount a scope on a T/C Triumph muzzleloader and I've seen (2) different bases. One is aluminum for about $15, the other is a steel Warne Maxima for about $45. I would think the aluminum base should be sufficient BUT these bases are about 4 1/2" long and all (4) mounting holes are on...

    Anyone use the 4a reticle?

I'm about to order a new rifle scope but instead of the standard plex, the 4a reticle looks nice as well. I would think without a heavy line at the 12 o'clock position, it would seem that it would "open up" the view somewhat. Just wondering what people think of the 4a reticle? I'd hate to get...

Is there an optimum comb height for a scope?

After shouldering my deer rifle several times while hunting I've realized those new scope rings I put on this summer are too dang high. When I shoulder it, I line up looking at the bottom edge of the scope. From the top of the comb to the center of the eyepiece is about 2.65" and I have a hair...

Any tricks for custom fitting a firearm?

I'm right handed, have reasonably long arms and fairly wide shoulders. When I shoulder my firearms, I have to lean my head over to the right to pick up the scope and I'm usually looking thru the frame edge of my glasses next to my nose. Then I start bobbing my head around to get it square with...

    Question about ballistics and windage

Not sure if this is the right forum but I didn't see anything better so here goes. I found a ballistics calculator on biggameinfo.com which is really nice. I filled in the data and left the wind speed at 10 mph. I hit the calculate button and got a real nice spreadsheet. There's a column for...
