Got my first deer Saturday. . .

Let me start by saying I'm pretty new to this whole hunting scene. I hunted a bit when I was young--mostly quail hunting with my grandfather and father. But both of these men died when I was in my teens, and I really had no one in my life to help teach me more about hunting. My two uncles...

    Recoil

Over on the Shotgun forum, recoil comes up a lot. In fact, there's a thread running by the shotgun guru himself (Dave McC) at this very moment. Maybe it's because shotgunners tend to put more loads down barrel than the rifle crowd, but they always seem to be mulling over how to reduce...

    What a shame...

I posted here earlier about my dissatisfactions with the first Bulgie Makarov I got from SOG. The slide on that gun was pitted all over the left side of the slide. I called to complain, and SOG Customer Service came through. They let me swap the pistol, took care of all the shipping, and even...

What's the average number of firearms on your "I want" list?

Do you plan your purchases and rank them in terms of priority? If so, in an average week/month how many guns do you have lined up on the old wish list? I usually at least have two or three in mind. Right now, I'd like a Kel-Tec P11 and a Winchester 70 in .30-06 with a Leupold scope.

Would you support gun registration if....?

Come with me to "Let's Pretend Land" for a moment. Saw a piece in the Wall Street Journal today about the difficulties of getting a drivers license in Britain (where the pass rate is something like 40%). Got me to thinking.... One of the antis' favored analogies is that of car registration...

Where can I find Federal Personal Defense Loads ?

I'm looking for the Federal Premium Personal Defense #2 loads in 12 gauge. Saw these mentioned in a previous thread. I've found mention of them on a number of internet sites, but so far, I can't find anyplace to order them. I'd like to get ahold of a box or two and test them alongside some...

Good deal on Federal shells at Academy...

Just picked up a case of Federal shells for $1.99 a box ($19.90 a case). If you live near an Academy Sports, you might check it out. I bought 7 1/2 shot, 1 oz., 3 1/4 dram. I also saw 6 and 8 shot. They were clearing them out pretty fast at that price.

The Steel in Our Guns ?

Over on bladeforums.com, the folks there are endlessly debating about the properties of one steel or another. I confess that I'm one of them, and I have my definite preferences when it comes to knife steel. All this focus on steels set me to thinking.... You just don't hear much about...

What If They Just Ignored This Idiot?

Last night, I saw the report here first about the Richmond shooting and then clicked on CNN for a couple of minutes just to confirm. It struck me that, in a perverse way, some folks might actually enjoy this shooting spree on a very basic level. Certainly, the attitudes of the reporters...

    Holster for S&W 686?

Any recommendations? Looking for something in the $40-$50 price range just for occasional strong side carry. Not all that interested in concealment. We're talking about a 4" barrel here.

    Thanks to TFL . . .

After over two years, I finally got to 1000 posts, and at the rate I post, it'll be two more years before I reach 2000. Chump change compared to folks like C.R. Sam and the rest of the top-25 hit list, but a milestone for me. (How do you all find so much to write?) Anyway, I just wanted to...

How will recent shooting spree fuel the antis' fires?

Was just reading an article in NRA's American Hunter. It pointed out that most of the anti-gun legislative acts in Great Britain followed shootings carried out by various psychopaths. Makes me wonder just how the anti-gunners will use the latest tragic events here to their advantage. As one...

Why do so many NDs happen to TVs?

First, let me begin by saying I know NDs are serious business, and we all need to take note when one happens. But I find it curious, and even a little funny, that so many television sets seem to be sacrificed because of NDs. On a pretty regular basis, we seem to get a report here of another TV...

Is the "Handpick" fee worth the money???

Just ordered a Bulgarian Mak from SOG yesterday, and the sales rep told me that the "handpick" option would secure me a more cosmetically appealing pistol. So, figuring "what the heck," I went ahead and shelled out the extra $10. In your experience, are these "handpick" fees worth the money...

Heard ANYTHING about the Bulgarian Maks???

I want to order one as a gift from SOG, but I still haven't heard that the guns are in stock. Last I heard, they were taking backorders, but I'm not too keen on plunking down $130+shipping with no definite date in sight. Any word yet on this mystery shipment of Maks that are supposed to be here?

    Buttstock Recoil Spring on Autoloaders

Actually, I didn't know that autoloaders have a recoil spring in the buttstock. Guess I need to take a closer look at the manual for my 1100. Anyway, I was reading an article on gun maintenance in Tennessee Sportsman and ran across this paragraph: Good advice? How often do you all clean...

    Thompson Center Renegade... Any Good?

Anyone here familiar with this rifle? Turns out my uncle just bought one for $25. The guy who sold it had no idea what it was. Of course, my uncle is always getting deals like this. He bought a commemorative edition Marlin 336 (like new) for $150 a while back. He goes to trade days and...

    Clinton for President in 2008?

Looks like Hillary is laying the groundwork. Scary thing is, a lot of folks will vote for her. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=694&u=/ap/20020816/ap_on_el_pr/hillary_clinton_s_campaign_6&printer=1 Sen. Clinton Builds Political Machine Fri Aug 16, 5:08 PM ET By RON FOURNIER...

So where does S&W stand these days?

I don't come over to the Revolver forum all that much, but I happen by occasionally. I notice a lot more posts this time about S&W revolvers. I own a S&W 686 (pre-agreement) and have considered a 617 to go with it. However, I refuse to buy a new gun from S&W until they formally repudiate...
