    Slings 1907 vs Montana

Any opinion on these two types of slings as to both a rifle support and carrier? Ease of use and durability? Is there a disadvantage to the wider stap as to use as a rilfe support? Is there a disadvantage to the narrower strap as to a carrier? Thanks, Bill Daniel

    30-06 to 338-06 Fire forming

The price of 338-06 brass seems to vary from $1.25 to $2.25 apiece. I have never fire formed brass before and wonder if this is needed to move the 30-06 brass to 338-06 or if I could simply run the 30-06 through the 338-06 sizer? Thanks, Bill Daniel

    Old eyes

My concealed carry is a steel comander sized Kimber 45. It is also my favorite target plinker. My wifes has a Crimson Trace which is great for low light but not so good in bright sun light at the range. My distance vision is 20/15 but am near blind close up. When I tilt my head back to see...

Has anyone bought a Mark VII yet?

I am still interested in a 338-06 hunting rifle and the Shaw Mark VII seems like the most economical route at present but as funds are limited now I am just gathering information. So, have any TFL'ers bought a Mark VII yet and if so what do you think? Hows the fit, finnish, balance etc? What...

    Clogged hollow point bullets?

Can some one explain why hollow point bullets clogged with fabric or flesh or what ever will not expand properly but if "clogged" with a plastic compound as in Hornady's Critical Defense will expand properly? Would not what ever filled the hollow point force the same expansion? Thanks, Bill Daniel

    Vertical stringing

What causes vertical stringing. I am working up reloads for my Savage CFP 308 with Varget and Sierra MK 168 gr. 45.4 grains and 45.7 grains had pronounced vertical stringing but 45.3 and 45.5 did not. Same COL. Thanks, Bill Daniel

    338-06 on a 700 action

Based on a TFL recommendation I have contacted Coleman Rifles about a custom 338-06. They will build the rifle on a Remington 700 action if I provide the action. My plan is to buy the Remington 700 in a 30-06 or 270 and send it to them for the project. Where might I pick up the least...

Custom rifle gunsmith for a 338-06

I thought I could have the Savage custom shop build a 116 in 338-06 but if I read the E-mail correctly they can not. Does anyone have a recommendation for a gunsmith to build a 338-06. This will be strictly for hunting so all weather is prefered. Thanks, Bill Daniel

    Oregon Trail Bullets

As per the safe advice here on TFL I pulled the Oregon Trail bullets on my 45 ACP's that I had loaded with 5.2 grains of Titegroup. I chaged them 5 with 4.1 grains of Titegroup, 5 with 4.2 and 5 with 4.3 grains then 5 with 4.5 and 5 with 4.7 and 5 with 4.9. At the range off the table as a...

    338-06

Who has experience with the 338-06. I was at my favorite gun shop a week or so back and they had a Cooper Rifle with a synthetic stock in 338-06. The attached target to the rifle had place three shots through the same hole. If I wanted a rifle to take game from white tail deer to brown bear...

    Lake City Brass

When resizing the Lake City brass from the Ultramax 308 ammunition even with a generous coat of Hornady One Shot lube I have to exert a lot of force. It flexes the 3/4" plywood top on my work bench and shudders along the length of the case. It is much more difficult to resize than the Hornady...

    Ultramax ammunition

I have 200 rounds of Ultramax ammunition in 308 with 168 gr.BTHP bullets ordered from Cabelas. It seems to be accurate for practice though slightly heavy on recoil. The brass is however unknown, I thought it would be Winchester when I bought it for some reason. My question is does any one...

    FPS with CUP or PSI

A question for those in the know. I was looking at load data in Hornady's 2010 book and noticed that some powders run much higher pressures for the same or near same muzzle velocity. Does the lower pressure mean longer rifle life or does it matter since they are with in SAAMI limits? B-LC(2)...

Oregon Trail Bullets vs. Lead cast

Can any one offer insight as to why Hodgdon data for lead cast bullets 200gr.SWC's has a maximum charge for Titegroup at 5.4 gr. and for OTB 200gr.SWC's at 4.7gr.? Why can you safely load lead cast hotter than Laser cast? Thanks, Bill
