Considering a Marlin XL-7 for a Savage barrel transplant? Read this

I wouldn't consider using one of the Marlin XL-7 or XS-7 rifles for a Savage barrel transplant unless I couldn't find a Savage or there were other circumstances at play. Here's my story: I bought a new XL-7 in 270 for cheap instead of a Stevens 200 for the same price, mostly because of the...

Do you really NEED magnum primers?

Load books always seem to specify magnum primers for loads using ball powders. I don't know that i've ever loaded a rifle round with a magnum primer. So far my reloads seem to perform just fine. Has anybody ever experimented with loading with/without magnum primers to see if there is a...

Using 40 S&W cases as short 10mm loads?

Anybody ever use 40 S&W brass to assemble 10mm loads by seating the bullet out to get a round with full 10mm LOA? Sort of like using 38 special in a gun chambered for 357 magnum? I would think this would be a good way to utilize some of the cheap police surplus once fired 40 brass that seems to...

Any banks still offering Weatherby's for CD deposits?

I can't find any info online about the banks that used to offer Weeatherby rifles instead of interest on CD deposits? I've Googled but I can't find any websites for the two banks I remember that used to do it. One was North Country bank in Michigan and the other was the Bank of Boulder. Anybody...

    Another bear handgun question-sorry

This is the third thread of mine related to a bear defense handgun, and hopefully it will be my last. Here it is: Which would you choose as a bear defense handgun- a six shot 44 magnum revolver or a 16 shot 10mm auto? I'm presuming the 44 magnum would be loaded with a 240 grain hard cast SWC at...

Need revised advice on 44 magnum load

Back in this thread http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413698 I asked about a 44 magnum load for last-ditch bear defense. The general consensus was a hard cast heavy bullet with a broad meplat. OK, so I ordered a Lee 300 GR FP mold and cast some bullets. I loaded some up in front...

Lee turret press- do spent primers go everywhere?

I use a Lee turret press for some of my pistol loading and it throws primers everywhere. I also have a Pro 1000 (which is based on the same frame) and it captures all the spent primers in the base. Not so with the turret press---some are captured by the base but at least 50% end up in the floor...

best 44 bullet for black bear defense load

For defensive use against an angry black bear would you choose a JHP, JSP or hard cast bullet in a 44 magnum revolver? This isn't a question about a hunting load to be used broadside from a tree stand. This is a question about the best load for when a backpacker accidentally gets between a sow...

    Lone Wolf Glock barrels...worth buying?

I'm thinking of getting a conversion .357 sig barrel for my Glock. Are the Lone Wolf brand any good, or should I get a Storm Lake or factory Glock? TIA for any advice.

    Two questions about heat treating

    1) Does it do any good to heat treat pure linotype? I am fortunate to have squirreled away some printer's type from a newspaper where I worked 25 years ago. I use it exclusively to cast rifle boolits, so it has lasted a long time. Does it make any difference to try to HT an alloy that's already...

Fluxing to keep the tin from separating: really?

I've read a bunch of older books on casting that tell me I need to keep fluxing my alloy to prevent the tin and antimony from separating out on the top. Really? Then why does my pot look exactly the same when I'm casting with pure lead as it does when I'm casting with pure linotype melted...

Lee liquid alox--anybody brew up their own version at home?

The title pretty much says it--has anyone managed to concoct a home brewed substitute for the commercial Lee product? All of the handgun bullets I cast these days are tumble lube designs. Like most handloaders and (especially) bullet casters, I like to experiment and try to save as much as I...

Insert for auto disk measure...who made it?

I know Lee has been making an adjustable charge bar for the Auto Disk powder measure for some time, but a recent thread got me to thinking about mine. Sometime in the early 90's I bought a machined aluminum one from a mail order company whose name I can't remember. This was before Lee was making...

Storm Lake Glock barrels... junk or not?

I'm thinking of getting a G32 357 conversion barrel and one of the brands I've found is Storm Lake. Are they any good or am I better off buying a factory Glock barrel?
