Mini 14 .223 - Wolf or South African ammo?

Has anyone had any experience with either of these two brands? How is the accuracy and reliability? Thanks.

    Mini-14: Ranch vs. Standard

I have decided on the blue version of the Mini-14. I know it is not exactly a target rifle. I can't decide which to get, the ranch or the standard. Anyone have an opinion? I wouldn't put a conventional scope on the ranch. However, a red dot might be good for night use at some future time...

    Rifles- stainless vs. Blued steel

If you were going to buy a Mini-14, are there any advantages to the blued steel over the stainless? I know the stainless is more corrosion resistant. I was curious if there was a downside to stainless? For example, is the stainless harder to machine to the same tolerance as blued steel? ....

Mini-14: Do the John Masen mags work yet?

I spoke to a person at John Masen about a month ago that said they will be making some new 10 round mags on the new tooling. Does anyone have any of these new ones? Do they work? Dave

What I learned about fighting rifles playing paintball...

If you haven't done it yet, you owe it to yourself to play paintball. I consider it one of many drills that you need to train for a SHTF situation. It is not perfect, it is a game. But, if taken in the right context along with training at good tactical schools, match shooting, physical...

    1894 - Mag capacity after 2002

I have heard that the limitation of 10 rounds in a tube fed lever gun will be lifted as of 1/1/2002. Does anyone know how many rounds a 1894 in .44 mag will be capable of holding in this case? Dave

    PC4 - The ideal woman's carbine?

I am not trying to stir up a hornets nest. However, many of us have wives that are not exactly crazy about firearms. I am trying to determine the best weapon to arm my wife with in the event of a SHTF situation? I have taught my wife how to operate my Glock 22. She has been shooting with me...

SKS - How fast are they to load?

I have been looking into SKS rifles. I am curious how fast they are to load with the stripper clips? Anyone who has a Garand, AR15, AK - can you compare between them. My experience has been the AR is faster than the AK because of the way the magazine has to be rocked into the mag well. The...

    Best rifle for non-gun person?

If you had to teach a female non-gun ethusiast how to shoot a rifle in a hurry, which gun would you choose? I live in occupied California. So, my choices are limited. The primary consideration to me would be ease of use and relatively small size. Here are my choices: SKS Mini-14 PC9/PC4...

So. California - where to buy an SKS?

I am curious if anyone knows of gunshops in Southern California selling SKS rifles. I have been to Turners and B&B. They don't have them. I would like to get one of the nicer ones on the market. Preferably, one that has not been shot much. Thanks.

Anyone taken Cold Steel's "cut and don't be cut" seminar?

I am interested in getting feedback from anyone who has taken the Cold Steel knife fighting seminar "cut and don't be cut". I have 10 years of Karate, 5 years of BJJ, and 1 year of Judo. I don't know anything about fighting with a knife. I figure my Karate footwork, timing, and reaction will...

Sporter rifles for sniping purposes - Tactical analysis?

I know the trend is towards heavier and heavier rifles for military sniper purposes. I just saw the new sniper rifle for the Army. The thing weighs 18 lbs. I am curious if the trend towards bigger is necessarily better? What I mean, is that when you look at what types of rifles were used...

Rem 700 vs. Winchester 70 - my experience...

I could not decide which to get. I bought both. I have the Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 with a wood stock. I also bought the Winchester Classic 70 in 30-06. Both have Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10x40 scopes. The Remington is a little smaller and I get slightly better groups. But, I have to say...

Converting a 700 ADL to a Long Range Precision Rifle?

I have a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10 scope. I actually do not do much hunting and would much rather have a long range, precision rifle. Would I just be better off selling it? Or can I "upgrade" the existing rifle I have? Thanks.

Combat-Your rifle choice maters very little!

Alot of us debate the whole "the best rifle" thing all the time. I don't claim to have actual combat experience. However, I am willing to bet that your choice of rifle will matter very little whether or not you survive a SHTF, riot, foreign invasion, ect... scenario. Assuming your rifle...

Ruger now making 10 round mags for Mini-14??

I heard today at a local Turner's Outdoorsman that Ruger is gearing up to make 10 round factory mags for the Mini-14. Has anyone heard the same? Dave

    45/70 as a combat arm?

Don't laugh. But, can anyone see a useful role for this as self defense or SHTF role? A Marlin guide gun in 45/70 makes sense in the backcountry of Alaska. However, would there ever be a scenario where this would be a primary weapon for other than chasing off bears? It sure seems like it...

    Marlin curved lever - opinions?

I have the Marlin 1894P. The gun is awesome. I like the shape of the straight lever. It makes for fast cycling. I checked out the 336CS and the curved handle and length of throw seemed awkward to me. Did anyone else have this impression at first? Did you end up getting used to it? Thanks.

    Lever action gunsmith - recommendations?

I have a Winchester trapper in 30/30. I noticed that the rounds tend to hang every 4 or 5 rounds going into the chamber. I usually back off slightly on the lever and then it chambers. It is pretty frustrating. I am looking for a good gunsmith. Any recommendations?? My Marlin 1894P works...

CA - Lever action vs. magazine fed semiauto

We are so screwed here in Kali. Our state only allows magazines of 10 rounds to be purchased with a new gun. Assuming you obey this law, it is starting to seem to me like a tube fed lever action is as good as a Mini-14, M1 Carbine, or similar semiautomatic caliber rifle in an intermediate...
