    In case anyone is interested...

Bought a set of bone grips for my Colt through Etsy. A guy in Thailand is making these from water buffalo so no endangered species involved. I think they look good and they fit perfectly on my Series 80 Government Model. A little thicker than the original stocks but that's typical of aftermarket...

What do these revolvers have in common?

It's sad that I only have one Colt with a 5" barrel.

    No answer...

I see posts on gun forums asking what is the maximum range for this rifle...or this caliber...or this scope. I don't see how such questions can be answered. At my age with my bad eyes 100 yards is really pushing it for hitting a paper target at all let alone making a group. A younger man with...

    The delicate DA Colt...

Not in my experience. Made in 1909 and has seen heavy match use for many decades. Still tight and accurate. From 1924 this Army Special saw many years service with the St. Louis PD and God only know how many rounds it's fired in the last 93 years. Finish is all gone but still functions...

    Wish it wasn't so far.

It's 100 miles round trip for me to make go to the range for some shooting. When my wife started talking about moving into a new house I expressed a desire for a home on a couple acres in the country so I could build my own range in back. She wanted to live in the middle of an urban area. So...

    Caliber choices.

What's the best caliber? Always a popular question. Of course there is no definitive answer. Too many variables. But I do have my own personal favorite. Not the magic caliber that can do it all (which doesn't exist) but a good choice for hunting most big game American hunters would pursue and a...

    I had forgotten...

How much fun it is to shoot this rifle. When I was 19 I went into my favorite gun shop and they had a Cogswell & Harrison double rifle in 375 Nitro Express on consignment. I had never seen a DBR in person and although this was a field grade box lock that would cause any well heeled aficionado...

    Long story...

I bought this Series '70 Government Model 45 brand new in February of 1973. It cost $135. I was making $1.65 an hour at the time so that was a lot of money for me. Woolworths had guns and ammo in the basement. A big glass fishbowl was on the counter next to the register filled with loose 45 ACP...

    Latest acquisition.

RIA 38 Super in nickel. I now have more Supers than I do 45s. Slapped on some polished bone grips from Boone Trading Co. Look very similar to ivory but not from an endangered species, not federally regulated and the animal was killed for purposes other than the gun grips so no guilt.

    OK, break 'em out...

There's an active thread about the history of the 38 Special cartridge. I love the 38 Special and the revolvers that take this round. I really like old cop guns with character. Bought a bunch in the 1980s as PDs switched to autos and dumped their old wheel guns on the used market. Here's a...

    Actual S&W police revolvers.

S&W Model 27-2 stamped Florida Highway Patrol. Model 64-2 stamped Corpus Christi PD. Model 15-3 used by campus police at a Louisiana university. Model 19-3 carried for 19 years by a federal officer. Registered Magnum stamped Utah Highway Patrol. A 38/44 Heavy Duty carried by a...

    One of my projects...

Bought this Stevens at a police auction in 1987 for $11.50. Someone had drilled a hole through the breech block and sunk a big machine screw through rendering it inoperable. Probably some clown making it into a toy gun for his grandson. Sights were missing. Wood was horrible. No finish left...

    BATF doesn't deposit my checks.

The last two times I renewed my C&R BATF never cashed the check. Is this widespread? The fee is marginal but they should cash the checks.

    Not even close...

Spent some time looking for a Garand dated 4/55 to match my birth date. Never did find one. Finally bought one from the DCM or whatever they call themselves. Ordered a post war H&R because I was hoping for a rifle that looked nice and I might win the lottery and get that 4/55 date. Nope. It is...

Took a Colt to the range today.

After work I took a shiny Police Positive Special to the range. Pictured is the gun...and the box of 357 Magnum ammo I took with it.

    New carry law...with a snag...

The governor signed the bill this morning that greatly expands concealed carry in Arkansas. This includes carry on college campuses. Problem is the law goes into effect Sept. 1 and requires an eight hour training program beyond what it required for the carry permit in the first place that is...

    Don't laugh...

One of my favorite rifles. Got it from a buddy who owed me some cash and offered this as a barrel/action. Picked up the scope at a local show for a very low price. The Ramline stock was way cheap from a catalog outfit. Very lightweight and compact (18" barrel), extremely rugged and reliable...

    Maybe an odd barrel length?

Never really thought about it but I guess a 25" barrel is a bit unusual. I have three rifles with 25" tubes. Two came that way and the third I specified on a custom build. Don't ask me why. I'm sure I had a reason at the time but it was 30 years ago and I have long forgotten. Oh, A BRNO 602, a...

    I just realized something...

Never really hit me before but I still have the very first center fire handgun I ever bought. Got it in February of 1973. Paid $135 for it which was a lot of money to a guy making $1.65 an hour. In 1975 I added the adjustable sights (don't recall what the smith charged me for that) and the...
