Opening Day of Maine Deer Season - 2013

Yesterday was Residents-Only day, and despite near record high temps, our party saw 10 deer in all. Upon arrival, we saw 4 does on a lawn next to our parking spot. Our hunting area includes a snowmobile trail over an old county road where I have a permanent blind. At at that location, I only...

    Value? Lathe-turned .308 Nosler Partition 180 grain

I have sixteen of these turned bullets, pre-1960. Anyone know the value? My B-I-L passed away and wrote on the box that they are RARE!

    Misplaced or lost T3 Magazine

Darn. That's the only problem with removable magazines. I can't find the original .243 Win magazine, but fortunately, still have the 5-rounder. Mags for Tikkas cost $65 plus shipping. Ouch! I may have forgotten it at Capitol City R&P last time. It's probably long gone.

    Impressed by the Ruger American

A few days ago, a friend asked me to sight-in and check-out his new Ruger American, in .308 Win, a gift from his son. Cabelas had "installed" a Leupold VX-2 on it, but not well-positioned for him. I decided to re-install it, finding one base not firmly tightened, so it was removed and...

    Lucky Group?

I went to the range yesterday to shoot several rifles and it was a mostly cloudy day with little wind from 7:00. My buddy Chuck and I were shooting at 100 yards, checking zero and trying loads. I shot mostly loads for the .243 Win, wood-stocked, pillar-bedded, Pac-Nor stainless, (sporter...

Hunting Rifles/Guns When We Were Younger

As I approach 70, I think back to the hunting rifles/shotguns I owned when a teen and young adult. My first was a Stevens 87A Semi-Auto 22LR. It wasn't extremely accurate, but killed a lot of small game, mostly squirrels and rabbits. Next was a Marlin 39A Mountie with a receiver sight that...

    Leupold "Long Range" Reticle

I bought a Leupold VX-2 from Cabelas last week (thanks to gift cards) and the only Multi-X reticle they had with wider fine lines was the "Long Range" reticle. I'd wanted the "Wide Multi-X", but they didn't have one in the 3-9X. The scope is on my .243 Win, which is used for coyotes and other...

Higher Velocity Can Mean Greater Field Accuracy

It's recognized by many shooters that lower velocity rounds require greater follow-through than higher ones. Shooting .22LR target and benchrest rifles, the rifle tends to move more in recoil prior to the bullet leaving the barrel. Perhaps it's most evident in handgun and black powder...

No more dumps to shoot rats in.

When I was a teen, we used to shoot rats at area dumps, but as they were converted to land fills and transfer stations, that opportunity is gone the way of the dodo bird. One day, three of us shot 97. That was the only time we counted. It was great practice for hunting and there were lots of...

    Good days at the Range!

I've had many good days at the local range, but my latest one on June 13, was pretty nice. My re-barreled Rem 700, 243 hadn't shot as well as hoped, but I decided to try some Nosler 80 grain Varmint bullets and they grouped 0.4" at 100 yards, even with some shifty winds. The Tikka T3, .243...

Air Crash-Gunman Killed Crew Plus Executive

Today, on the Smithsonian Channel, Aircraft Disasters Program, Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771 crash investigation showed a handgun barrel being recovered from the crash scene, then the frame and cylinder. I hope it was just a bad reinaction and not the official revolver parts recovered...

The Good Old Days are Gone

About a year ago, I wrote a blog, stating that we were in some of the best of times regarding guns and shooting. There were wonderful new guns, great ammo, plentiful supplies and after-market parts. Laws were the least restrictive in decades. How quickly things can change. Laws are soon to...

Survey on Entering, then ads within text.

I was told I was a winner of one of a couple of items, one being a $500 gift card and the other, an IPad. I opted out of both, then noted that several words within even my messages were links to advertisements. I also tried to delete my posts and it wouldn't let me. What's going on???

Repairing light scratches on SS guns

I recently bought a used Ruger Stainless MKII pistol, but it had some light scratches that made bright streaks on an otherwise nicely brushed finish. Note that these were not deep gouges, just some light scratches that may have been caused by dragging the gun across a hard-edged surface...

Weaver Top Mount Base Winchester 1300 Shotgun

I looked up the listing for this shotgun top mount base and it gave these two numbers: #416M and #54. The base(s) may need to be ordered, but it's unclear whether either base would fit or that both are needed. The Brownell's listing shows the 416M in the One-Piece/Set column, but shown each...

    Some First Hunting Experiences

When I was 15, around 1959, I bought my first rifle, a .30-06 Savage 110, (newly introduced), but hadn't been able to afford a scope yet, so used the open iron sights. My cousin Gene took me on a hunt with his in-laws in Unity, Maine. There was about a foot of snow on the ground, and it was...

    Anyone tried waxing bullets?

I've experienced consideralbe fouling from Barnes TSX bullets and a bit from Hornady GMX, probably because my rifle has seen a fair number of hot loads. Ha anyone here tried using auto wax or similar coating on bullets (not molybdenum) to minimize fouling? I'm wondering whether pressures would...

Unsafe or "Slob Shooter" TV Scenes

It grates me every time I see certain "gunsmiths" shooting, but having a camera person looking from the muzzle end of a firearm. I'm pretty sure they only do the poses with empty weapons, but don't tell you. Yes, they all say something like "Don't try this...", but that apparently doesn't...

    Nice .223 Rem Handload

I was very lucky to find this great-shooting load for my Tikka 595. It also works well in a buddy's Rem 700 rifle: 50 grain Hornady SP SX 25 grains of Accurate 2230 CCI Small Rifle Primer Mixed batch of cases, but primer holes uniformed. Velocity measured: 3,175fps out of my Tikka 595, 22"...

    New Tikka T-3

I got a cost-of-living retirement check and went shopping for a new rifle. At Cabelas, I found a .243 Win, Tikka T-3 Lite for $549 and couldn't pass it up. I'm very impressed with the rifle, especially the stiffness of the synthetic stock and the accuracy it affords. The bedding system uses...
