    617 best group

Did a lot of shooting with my 617 today and here is the best groups from 25 yards off a rest with CCI - SV ammo. Federal Match HV and Blazers did just about as well. The SVs ejected smoother than the Match.

More testing of ammo for my 617

It was a perfect day for testing at the range today. Temps were in the hight 60s to low 70s while there. I was able to test a small variety of ammo to see which works best in my 617 S&W .22 revolver. My Go - To round for this gun is Federal Premium HV. They shoot the best, all go off on the...

Spent some time with my 617 today

I was able to spend some time at the range today testing what ammo my 617 likes for Steel Challenge shooting. Reliability was the most important area I was concerned with. I shot CCI Mini Mags, Blazer, CCI- SV, Eley Match, Federal Premium HV and Wolf MT. The Mini Mags gave me 3 failures to...

My Mark IV doesn't like the cold.

I've been shooting it for the past two weeks with no problems. Temperatures have been in the 60s and 70s and the gun was flawless. Sunday we had our Steel Challenge Match and I was anxious to shoot for the first time with this build. Heck, it's been working so well with over 2000 rounds...

Great session with my Mark IV 22/45 Lite and my Mark III modified Hunter.

Weather was perfect today for a practice session with temperatures in the low to mid 70s all morning. I had my Ruger Mark III with the Pac Lite barrel and compensator on it along with Hogue grips and my Mark IV with Alllchin compensator and Stoner grips. Both guns have the full Volquartsen...

Time to first shot with RFPO

I've been practicing my Steel Challenge and in particular time for the first shot with my rimfire open pistol. I'm now down to .71 seconds as my best time so far. I average .85. What kind of times are you getting?

What to focus on for the first shot?

I shoot Steel Challenge matches in the Rimfire Open Pistol class. I use a Ruger Mark IV with a C-More red dot sight and a 12 minute dot so I can pick it up fast. Starting at a low ready, pointing the gun at a pole in front of the first targets I would keep my eyes on the dot and on the whistle...

    Mark IV 22/45 back again.

Back again from Ruger. My Mark IV 22/45 Lite had to go in for service again. First I had the Recall work done and while at Ruger they replaced my barrel. It was loose and kept backing out of the receiver when cleaning. This caused lot of jams. After getting it back I tried to break it in...

    My faster Steel Challenge Ever.

Drove to the range today for our monthly Steel Challenge match. It's only a 30 minute drive and very relaxing. Got all set up with my backup Mark III Hunter model. I love how this has been shooting for me. First stage, 5 to go, went well. My shooting buddy commented on how nice the Hunter...

Found a Ruger Mark III Hunter

Trigger is the best I've felt on a Ruger. It came with 7 magazines and a set of Altamont grips. This will be a great backup for my Steel Challenge gun.

    New respect for Ruger

I just got my gun, Ruger Mark IV 22/45 lite, back from Ruger and they did a great job. I had to send my Mark IV in for the Safety recall and had they fix my barrel which was coming loose when I cleaned it. It would slide inside the receiver and accuracy was very poor. I went to the range...

    22/45 back from Ruger

Today I got my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 back from ruger after they did the Safety Recall and replaced my barrel. Fantastic service. Shipping took the longest time, two days there and only one day for the return. They only had the gun for one day. My barrel was sliding in the receiver and I...

Where do those little parts go?

I've been doing my own gunsmithing on my revolvers for about 40 years and have gotten pretty good at it. Unfortunately I'm getting old and I end up not being able to handle the small parts anymore. I shake too much do to my Parkinsons. The last time I worked on my Model 617 I took the cylinder...

Finding the right ammo for my 617

Well, it looks like I'm going to be without my Ruger Mark IV for a little bit because of the recall. My gun doesn't show the effect of not putting on the safety all the way. I guess people that don't understand simple safety rules and need lawyers to make their guns function correctly...

Good day with Ruger Mark IV and S&W 617

Today was a good day at the range with my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 and my S&W 617. Two weeks ago I noticed that my compensator was filled with lead and I had to clean it. I tried “Wipe Out” that I got from Brownells to clean the comp. It worked like a charm. After about an hour of sitting I...

    Success with Standard Velocity ammo.

I've been shooting CCI Mini Mags and Blazers because both work real well in my Mark IV 22/45 LIte. They are accurate and very reliable. The Blazers are good but sure do smoke a lot. I can really tell the compensator is working when I use them. Today I wanted to test some Aquila Standard...

    April's Steel Challenge Match

I watched a training video from Rob Leatham, TGO about picking up speed and accuracy by holding the gun tight, point at the target and slap the trigger, in a simple way to describe his thoughts. I picked up another 25 seconds, improving on 6 stages. I still need to work on Pendulum and Outer...
