Adjusting .44 mag load to minimize muzzle blast

I shoot a 5" .44 mag. Since most load data was originally developed with longer barrels in mind, I obviously get more muzzle flash/blast than those who were developing the load. If I want to choose a load with one goal being to minimize muzzle flash/blast from my shorter barrel would I get...

Yippee, I'm going to be back in the reloading game.

I was just getting started in reloading using my buddy's equipment and location when he lost everything in a divorce. Then, I moved to MS and bought a house (temporary house until we can build a permanent place) that has zero room to set up any kind of decent reloading room. After doing some...

    Anybody use the combination pan/funnel?

I was browsing around looking at reloading equipment yesterday and saw that several manufacturers are selling little combination pan/funnels that replace the standard pan on a scale. Anybody use them? Looks like they make transferring powder from the pan to the case a little more spill-proof.

Ever wonder what happened to all the great American gun factories?

This link was posted on another firearms forum I'm on. It shows what happened over the years to some of the firearms factories that were so prevalent in the New England region. Good read for firearms history buffs. http://tincanbandit.blogspot.com/2015/02/ghost-gun-factories.html

Why don't charts list fill volume percentage?

When I started reloading with my buddy, he had Quickload. That software shows percentage of fill volume for a particular load. Judging by the number of recent threads that have discussed loads having too little volume (either causing bad ignition and erratic velocity or easily allowing for a...

Old Ruger broke and they are taking care of me

My newest acquisition - a beautiful Ruger Security 6 4" stainless didn't turn out so well. After the 1st shot, the cylinder didn't want to turn as freely. I noticed that the cylinder gap was gone. HMMM. I cocked and rotated the cylinder (single action) and fired again. Same thing. On the...

Am I the only one that gets mixed emotions as an auction is about to end?

You've bid on a Gunbroker auction and your bid is winning. You've made your bid just a bit above your comfort level (I'm talking <$20 more than what you would have liked to have been your max). As the auction is winding down, do you find yourself partially hoping that someone outbids you and...

    Value of a S&W pre-15 nickel - not pristine

I've found a Pre - model 15 nickle plated S&W with some chips in the nickel plating. Grips are aftermarket. There is a little bit of end-shake in the cylinder but that can probably be shimmed. What do you think would be a reasonable price for this pistol as a shooter? Obvioiusly, it isn't...

Interesting article about a 3rd world gunsmith

I saw this on Fox and thought I would pass it on. We sometimes forget how skilled craftsmanship can occur even without a "proper" shop environment. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/03/18/skilled-gunsmith-helps-kurds-turn-isis-guns-on-terrorists/

Why the lack of pistols with a grip safety

I'm not a huge fan of the 1911 (oh, the blasphemy) - I just never grew to love it when I was in the Navy. However, there is one part of the 1911 that does hold my interest. That is the grip safety. I know that LOTS of concealed carriers dislike manual safetys on their carry weapon. Others...

Help me understand the flavors of striker fired pistols

I didn't want to derail one of the other threads that gave rise to this question. It appears that there are at least 2 flavors of striker fired mechanisms. One flavor - i.e. Glocks, partially cocks the striker by the slide action. If I understand correctly, this type of action does not allow...

Anybody tried the new Durablue yet?

I just saw a Youtube video about Durablue (by DuraCoat). It is a spray-on finish that looks like deep bluing but goes on like standard DuraCoat- only it doesn't require baking. It looks like it would be a great way to resurrect an old "shooter" that isn't worth the money to do a real blue job.

15 greatest handguns of all time - I think "sort of".

Interesting piece - especially from a Washington DC newspaper. Personally, I see no reason to include the S&W 10 - it is really not groundbreaking or particularly "exceptional". I would have included the Colt Python in its place...

What besides the Ruger MK series are always "cocked and locked" when loaded?

I briefly owned a Ruger MKII. Fun gun to shoot at the range but that was the only place I felt comfortable taking it. I wore it once into the woods but quickly gave that up. What I couldn't get past was the fact that if the chamber was loaded, the only thing that kept that pistol from...

Need recommendations - shooting apps for android

Well, I've finally done it and gotten myself into the 21st century phone wise. I've given up my old flip phone and moved to a Galaxy S5. Now, I'm looking for recommendations on the best shooting related apps (free preferred). Your thoughts are appreciated.

Anybody know when BPS does its hunting promotion?

I've got to burn a couple of Bass Pro Shops gift cards. If I recall, they start their hunting sale sometime late in the summer but I'm looking to see if anyone has an idea of when this year's event will be.

Burris Posi-lock - lock it between shots?

I took my new-to-me Burris posi-lock (sitting on a 7mm-08 Encore pistol) to the range today. While I'm not a serious expert with a large pistol, I can usually maintain minute-of-deer results. I only had time to pop off 10 rounds starting at the 25 yd line to get it roughly on target then...

Any good stores going from Tally to Auburn to Tuscaloosa, to Montgomery back to Tally

After dropping my daughter off at the FSU dorms next Wed, the wife and I are going to make a loop up through Auburn, Tuscaloosa and then back to Tallahassee probably through Montgomery. Are there any good gun/outdoor shops should plan on hitting along that route? How about great non-chain...

Has a movie ever made you want to buy a certain firearm?

My wife and I watched the movie about Ernest Hemingway a couple of days ago (the one where you get nice views of Nicole Kidman's assets). That got me curious about Hemingway so I did some Googling and found out that he shot himself with a Boss shotgun. I'd never heard of Boss, so I started...
