M17 / M18 acquisition by USAF, USMC, USN

All of the above mentioned forces seem to go with the M18 (= the compact version). Any insights ideas why at last only the Army sticks with the original full size model? I should maybe add that in fact the "compact" version is only slightly shorter and a good deal heavier than a (considered...

    ZAMAC gun slides

I have a German-made blank firing gun, early 1980ies. Suppose it is of the type that was also produced as a live firing gun for tge US market before the import ban. Are these classic saturday night specials completely ZAMAC (or any other similar alloy), except for barrel, striker etc.? I was...

    USAF Baby Browning

Several web sources claim that the Baby Browning was used by the USAF in the 1960ies, supposedly as part of the pilot survival kit. Can anybody here substantiate (or debunk) that story? http://oldschoolguns.blogspot.com/2011/11/browning-baby-25-acp.html?m=1...

    "Shrinking" bullets

I recently discovered that some rounds out of my 9mm cache were seemingly "shrunk", say the bullet has sunk a little deeper into the cartridge. Is there any potential concern firing these rounds in respect of weapon function / pressure?

    Fischer Development Glock "click-on" suppressor

Any ideas anybody how this gadget works? It's simply clipped onto the accessory rail of any G17 or 19 w/o need for a threaded barrel - how can a suppressor function without actually being attached to the barrel?

Help with grip panels for old Zamac mousegun

I've inherited an old German-made Zamac blank firing gun from my granddad. I use it sometimes on new years eve and it works fine, but the old grip panels are worn off, broken and partially distorted. I'd like to fit it with a completely new, more modern "wrap around" grip - it's just that I...

Why did the HK UCP never actually work out?

The HK UPC was cancelled although the MP7 turned out to be quite a success. Of course, a PDW caliber is as such designed around SMG-sized platforms, all the same the FiveSeveN gave proof that it IS possible to use such a round in a pistol...

comeback of SMGs in the US Army?

Does anybody have further insights about the request for proposals for a new SMG that the Army has issued (and recently withdrawn). I'd be especially curious why they seem to want to go back to a simple 9mm and ignore the PDW-type platforms that were said to be the future not so long ago. I...

weight vs. speed in terms of flight and terminal ballistics

I still don't get it in every aspect: Imagine you have a fmj .45 acp and a fmj 5.7 x 28 with the same muzzle energy, how would they differ in terms of flight path (ok, that one I can imagine...), penetration, energy transfer in soft medium etc.? I reckon fat+slow means more drop and thus less...

Chinese laser gun - beginning of the end of the projectile era?

Obviously, the Chinese managed to pack a laser into a assault rifle sized weapon that is able to set clothing afire from 800m. I wonder whether we are actually witnessing the beginning of the end of the projectile weapon era? That would be bad news for us as civilian shooters, since we'll never...

    9mm Enhanced Barrier Round

Does anybody have ballistic data on the EBR that was seemingly developed along with Glocks entry to the MHS trials? Speaking of, do the Army or the Marines even consider using something other than plain and simple ball ammo in their handguns? It is somewhat odd imho that they put so much...

full flap holster for G17 in Europe

Hey there, finally I found a full flap holster that I reckon would fit my G17. https://acecase.com/flap-holster.html Problem is shipping would be about thrice the price of the actual product which seems a little bit too much even though I'd do like having the piece. Any ideas whether there...

    Handgun noise levels

When shooting at an indoor range,I notice a huge difference between 9mm and .22lr. The centerfire blast does not only appear louder (I war double hearing protection), you kind of feel the shock waves with your whole body (like on a rock concert). Th .22 is, by comparison, just a soft pop. Are...

Revolvers as a duty weapon today?

Are there any PDs in the Staates or other agencies worldwide that still issue revolvers?

    Smooth bore shotgun-to-pistol-caliber inserts

E.g. gunadapters.com offers a vast variety of inserts converting shotguns to fire pistol or revolver calibers. I just wondered why they also have smooth bore models - wouldn't that be a.) illegal in the US and b.) useless because the bullet is not stabilized? They DO sell rifled models as well...

military use of .22lr (and other "minor" handgun calibers)

I guess back in the Vietnam era, the .22lr still had kind of a niche role in the military for taking out sentry dogs and the like. I guess with all the development in large caliber suppressors, there is no more use for this tiny caliber in the military context? It#s just that a good suppressed...

    Over- and understabilization

Two questions concerning the twist rate / stabilization: 1.) Is it true that overstabilization only becomes an issue well above 300 yrds and is no problem for shorter distances? (e.g. shooting 22lr through a 1/7 AR barrel) 2.) on the other end of the scale, after which distance will an...

    Recoil operation in machine guns

Just wondering why most armed forces worldwide now utilize gas-operated infantry-role MGs - I only know of the Germans and Austrians still using a blowback-operated 7,62 version of the WWII MG42, yet there are no true new developments. I it simply the weight or are there other issues with...

    Steyr AUG - opinions, experiences...?

I have been reassigned to the Ready Reserve (kind of National Guard) here in Austria due to all that terrorism scare. We're going to have our first weapons training soon and the main infantry weapon is of course the Austrian-made Steyr AUG. Thing is I have been trained on the FN FAL back in my...
