What is so special about them? Why did they become so popular?

Never heard of them until I googled them. I don't see anything special about them and they certainly aren't popular.

I only encountered them by chance a day or two ago browsing Bud's.

Definitely don't seem to be worth 2x the price of a stock Glock that you could modify to your own tastes, probably for less. Different strokes for different folks, though!
