Wyoming (hunting) Firearm Law Change

Wyoming has changed its laws regarding what is legal for hunting.

For Deer and Antelope size animals, you can now use 223s and 357s. 17 cal and 22 magnums can be used for turkeys.

Now I have to get more tags, I was gonna try a muzzle loader for deer this year, I also want to use my Marlin 94 38/357, or one of my 223s.

Decisions Decisions. Some many guns so few tags.

Thats great news. Not that I'll use a 223, but that Wyo finally went to 357.

A friend of mine used my brothers 357 Rossi with a 357 158 Lee RF on a doe last fall.
AWESOME results.

It had to happen. They started talking about this as soon as I rebarreled my .220 Swift to a 6mm wildcat, just to be legal for Wyoming Antelope.

I saw that in the new reg book also! I have been checking the Commission web site for the November meeting minutes, and they aren't posted yet, but it is in the 2013 regs! My daughter is happy, she gets to hunt her first Antelope this year and wants to use the AR! I need to get busy finding a 62gr Sierra Gameking load it likes!

I think I may need to buy a new rifle, also! My .220 Swift won't shoot 60+ grain bullets at all, period, so I think a .22-250 is in order!

EDIT: P.S. - all ammo must shoot at least a 60gr projectile.

Shouldn't there be a post here where someone says you'll be sorry if you hunt deer/antelope with anything less than a .50 BMG round?

I have not hunted with them yet but, Nosler 60g Partition's look to be a good option as well. I have loaded up some and tested them in my AR's and they show good accuracy at 100 yards. I have not tested them at longer distances yet.

I bought 150 of them when they were on sale at Cabelas for $17 per 50. Federal also has a factory load using the Nosler 60g Partition.

Shouldn't there be a post here where someone says you'll be sorry if you hunt deer/antelope with anything less than a .50 BMG round?

Not me.

I shot a few rounds out of a .50 sniper rifle in the Army. After the first round it wasn't fun. It was just a duty.

i have been watching some of these life in alaska shows on tv and i notice that some use 223 ar-15 style rifles for hunting they seem to work well. i am glad to see more states allowing 17 mag and 22 mag rifles for turkey.

That gets it down to only 5 states now that allow rifles, but do not allow the 223 for deer. There will stll be the guys posting advice saying "223 is not allowed in most places for deer hunting", anytime the topic comes up. With modern bullets there is no reason not to. The Barnes TTSX is also proving to work very well. I'd be content with any 60+gr expanding bullet.

Nice that you can use .357s now. I like to carry a sidearm when hunting but never took my .357 in the field because it wasn't legal to hunt with. Is there any thing that excludes .357 handguns?

I would never use it of course unless it was for a coup de grace but would like to be able to carry it.

NOPE

For all big and trophy game species, legal firearms also include any cartridge of at least .35 caliber and at least 1.5 inches in overall length, or a cartridge that generally delivers 500 foot-pounds of impact at 100 yards.

I measured a bunch of 357s, my reloads and factory rounds, the make the 1.5 inch overall length it calls for.

A normal 357 wont develop 500 ft lbs at 100 yard out of a revolver, but you'll notice the link says OR not And.

I figure they realize (rightly so) that a hand gun hunter isn't going to be shooting at 100 yards anyway.

There is a reason the Natives use 223s, the same reason they used the 308, and '06 before that, that's because that is what the National Guard uses.

They are normally a "hunter-gathers society. Many don't have an income except their guard drill checks. So they supplement their ammo supplies by getting ammo from the Guard.
