Winchester Model 70 Custom Sporter

I have read on various Forums that some of the rifles coming out of CT did not have excellent quality control during certain years, but can't remember which were the questionable years.

For those in the know, when purchasing a used Winchester that was produced in CT, what year of production should be avoided?

The rifle I am considering was made in 1999. Was that a good year?

Thanks in advance.

I bought 6 Model 70 actions, post 64 and pre-USRAs. Also have a couple factory rifles from that period.

I've made some dern good target rifles out of those actions, plus hunting rifles.

THERE ISN'T A DERN THING WRONG with the post 64 - pre USRAs rifles. Off all the Model 70s I think the FN one is the best off the shelf.

That would be a USRAs rifle.

To be honest I can't say anything about the USRAs Model 70s, don't have one.

However if you don't like it. send it to me, I need another Model 70 action to make a 260 Rem or some other sort of 6.5, (haven't decided yet).

In 2005 I found a 1956 M70 30-06 with 2x7 Redfield Widefield scope in the paper for $585.
I added a Borden Rimrock stock, Pac Nor featherwieght 270 barrel, Leupold 2x7 scope, Harris swivel bi pod, and Butler Creek stretchy sling.
I killed 4 mule deer with it in 2008 and 5 in 2009.
Great rifle.

In 2012 I found a 1953 M70 308 in a gun store for $400 + $35 tax.
It has joined the line of rifles waiting for me to rebarrel.

I bet you spend a lot of time looking in gun hiding spots. Those deals aren't easy to come by.
