Winchester Model 12

Hey,

My Dad has an old Winchester model 12 shotgun.
It's 16 GA, and is the one you can unscrew the mag
and barrel to break it into two parts.

The problem is, the action bar will catch the bolt,
but when you go to cycle it, the action bar won't
stay hooked into the bolt. It just pops out like when
you go to split the gun in two.

How do I fix it? And what is the procedure for breaking
it into two sections?

Enjoy that Model 12. I have wanted a Model 12 since I was 15. I finally got mine last year. In 16ga. It is pretty faded on the outside, but the workings show almost no wear at all. I LOVE it.

Let's hear it for the Model 12, 16 GA Winchester! I have my Grandaddy's from 1916. They are the best operating pump in my opinion, simply because the safety is in front of the trigger guard where it's supposed to be, and the release mechanisim to put a shell in the magazine is behind the trigger guard, where it is supposed to be. Exact opposite of the Remington 870, and I never have figured out why more gun makers didn't use the same set up.

I grew up with it handed down to me, and used it exclusively for dove, quail and cat squirrels growing up. Only shotgun I ever had, til I got in my late twenties.

About twenty years ago, I had mine completely overhauled by a gunsmith down in Houston, and put then I put it away for my son, after I found out how they were appreciating in value. I am hoping he can hand it down to his son when he has kids, (if the United Nations and the Brady Bunch don't manage to confiscate every gun in the U.S. before then.)

A belated thank you Mr. Nolden. So here's where I'm at...

Haven't had too much time to work on the 12. Dad was looking through some catalogs and found a rebuild kit for it. It's all the springs for the Model 12.

Considering the fact that it's a low serial number, the springs are over 80 to 90 years old, I figure a fresh set would be a step in the right direction.

Any other reccomendations?

Btw, wht is the Blue Book value on a low serial gun with matching numbers?? It's still in very good condition too.
