Whats this part for on the AR15 trigger?

Whats this little part for? It rests in its own little hole inside the hammer. I dont see any use for it....

OOH! I just had an idea! The hammer retaining pin has two slots in it. One is directly in the middle of it. Could the little piece of metal slip into the indentation in the retaining pin to eliminate play in the hammer, and help keep the pin from drifting out of the lower receiver?

It's called a hammer pin retainer of a "J" pin.
On standard AR and M16 hammers with a groove on the end the pin is bent on the outer end into a "J" shape.
