What will the .257 Roberts do?

I have two .257 "Bobs", a new Ruger M-77 Mk-II, and a Rem. 722. Both wear 22" barrels. How fast can I safely get 100gr and 120gr bullets moving?

257 Roberts

I have no personal experience here but Lee's Modern Reloading lists loads up to 3100 fps for the 100gr and 2800 fps for the 120gr if it helps.

You can safely hit 3,000 fps with a 100 gr or 2,700 fps with a 120 gr in most rifles. Most factory ammo is loaded 100 fps or more below that. The 257 Roberts is a light-recoiling rifle with minimal muzzle blast, unlike its friend the 25-06.

If you really want your 257 BOB to sing, you have to use 4320, 4064, or H380. Load them to around 46000 cup. and have a ball. My brother has an early Ruger in it, and it will probably go in the casket with him.

I absolutly LOVE my Roberts and will take and medium size game animal around. Its highly accurate and I have taken mine out to 500yds on cototes and woodchuck(Deer out to 350). I am sending them out @2980fps(chronographed)with 100gr.Partitions with 37.8gr. Varget but could get a little more but it likes the load so no need to. Im trying some Accubonds this weekend and will let you know what they do. Goog luck with it, Its a great round.

My 257 Roberts in a Featherweight Model 70 is my go to hunting rifle. I've been shooting it for over 20 years. I have never felt the need to drive it at mag velosities. Its an under-rated cart. Aced out by the 243. Its highly accurate and can normally shoot heavier bullets then the 243s. I normaly use 100 grn. bullets.

Why does everyone worry about speed! I load my .257 Roberts for maximum accuracy. I'm sure that the deer or what ever you shoot will not notice 100 or 200 feet per second difference!
