Just wondering what that thingy is on the back top of the Smith Bodyguard .38 special? What is its purpose and is it removable? Is that side plate polymer?

I looked at one of the reviews on the gun.
That thing you mentioned is the cylinder release!
The gun has stainless cylinder and barrel. The upper frame is aluminum alloy.
The lower grip frame is steel and polymer.

Ambidiestros cylinder release.

I had one of those. The cylinder release was OK.

Its a whole different smith. The frame has a button on the back that is spring loaded. It has no hand like other smiths.

My problem is the frame is aluminum and the cylinder got pushed back into the aluminum creating more endshake until it misfired. This took not too many rounds. I sent it back and had it rebuilt. After the second time, I traded it for a 637.

This is the recoil plate shield. You can see where the cylinder was driven into the aluminum. Very little support.
