What do y'all think about the recent M16 Parts kits?

It seems we have another wave of M16 parts kits coming in. Triangle handguards, A1 sights, etc. Meaning A1 M16s without the receiver, barrel and full auto goodies.

Are these clapped out $500 kits worth it?

Not to me... There are a lot of good new AR15's out there for around that price.

Depends what you want.

If you want a shooter, it's a terrible value. If you want a battlefield pick-up M16A1 lookalike, it could be a good start.

Just be sure double check the price of the remaining parts. Depending on your intended level of authenticity, it could be cheaper to just buy something like Brownell's retro AR15.

I bought a few M16 kits back when they were $199 and at that time they were a good buy. I built two M16 clones (M16E1, M16A1) and an XM177E2 out of them and am very happy at the way they turned out. One of the kits I got looked as though they hacked up a brand new rifle, one looked like they cut up a freshly refurbished piece and the last one had the rode hard and put away wet look. All the internal parts were in excellent condition on all three kits.

But, for five bills, I would pass on these and I would spend my dough on one of the new Colt clones of the venerable M16.

For clarification, The kits from Centerfire Systems and others are only missing the lower receiver and barrel. I'm guess because they were "machine gun parts" or something.
