What ammo do you carry in your HD/SD?

What ammo do you carry in your side arm? Is it different than what you have for home defense?

I use Hornady 00 Buck Z-Max.

In my sidearm it's 147gr PDX1 - just because I haven't gotten around to purchasing the Winchester Ranger "T" Series 147gr RA9T

Technically that different than my primary HD since my primary HD is Winchester #1 Buck - that's the only brand I could find in #1 Buck.

Generally Speer Gold Dots or Winchester PDX1 and I do not differentiate between self defense and home defense uses.

In my carry guns...

M&P 45c.....Speer Gold dot 200g +P

Karm CM9....Speer Gold dot 124g +P short barrel

Kel-tec p3AT...Speer Gold dot 90g

My wife's bedside gun is a S&W 581 357 mag loaded with 125g Hornady CD

My bedside is whatever I carried that day.

Speer Gold Dot 180-grain in my PX4.

Speer Gold Dot 90-grain in my LCP.

Hornady 75-grain TAP in my DDM4.

Hornady 00 Buckshot TAP in my 870.

My general rule is Speer for handguns, Hornady for long guns. I consider Federal HST loads and Winchester T-series loads equivalent if Gold Dot is unavailable. I'm particularly fond of 9x19 147-grain HST and may favor it over Speer when I get my 9mm.

Are you asking because you want a recommendation or just to do a survey? I have different guns for carry and home defense so I use different rounds. I generally prefer Gold Dots but also use HSTs and Golden Sabers, depending on the gun.

Handgun rounds....

In different rounds/calibers, I'd suggest this top rounds:
9mm(9x19mm); Ranger T 127gr +P+ JHP, Golden Saber(bonded) 124gr +P JHP, Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P, Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P, Corbon DPX
.40S&W; Ranger T T-series 155gr JHP, Corbon DPX, Speer Gold Dot 165gr JHP, Hornady Critical Duty 175gr, DoubleTap Ammo .40
.45acp; Golden Saber 230gr JHP +P, Ranger T T-series 230gr JHP +P, Speer Gold Dot 230gr +P, Corbon DPX
.357sig; DPX load, Ranger T 125gr JHP, Speer Gold Dot 125gr JHP, DoubleTap Ammo JHP, Golden Saber 125gr JHP
.38spl +P; Speer Gold Dot 135gr +P JHP, Buffalo Bore 158gr lead SWC-HP +P, DPX load, MagSafe SWAT +P, Corbon +P+ 110gr JHP

.45 ACP = 230gr Golden Sabers or FMJ (both of which are the two loads to feed equally reliably in the Commanders, the 4516's, and the Ballesters).

.41 Magnum = 175gr Silvertips only.

10mm = 175gr Silvertips or PMC 170gr JHP (the latter no longer made but I still have about a dozen boxes).

.44 Special = 200gr GDHP in both of the wife's Taurus 431's.

I am mostly curious on how many people use Hornady ammo. Thats what I have and use and just wanted to know the prefered brand of self defense.

My 9mm SD ammo has a Hornady XTP bullet setting on whatever powder Fiocchi put in the case.

.38 special SD is 158gr LSWCHP +P by Remington

Home defense is 12 gauge 00 buck by Remington.

I haven't shot any of the Hornady Critical Defense but everything I've seen indicates it is a solid defensive round. In some calibers, it's not among the top three performers (in ballistic gel). In others, it's very good. In .380, it's the only hollow point I would consider due to penetration issues with most hollow points (I carry FMJ in .380).

The Hornady XTP is an okay defensive round in some calibers but I think it basically started out as a hunting bullet. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I've seen Fiocchi ammo loaded with XTPs at a price reasonable enough to stock in a decent quantity.
