Directed Beam Weapons

Non lethal and lethal directed beam weapons comprise the next frontier of warfare tools. Some use acoustical energy, others employ lasers, and another category uses projection of millimeter wave energy.

The millimeter wave beam weapon, known as 'Active Denial System' , works by heating the skin to a very shallow depth. Intense pain, but no permananent or serious damage reportedly results. Pain ceases instantly, once exposure to the beam is removed. This is described as a 'long range' anti-personnel device. The beam easily penetrates clothing; however, it may be blocked by specially selected materials. Systems may be fixed or vehicle mounted.

As frequently happens, the stuff of science fiction becomes reality.

"Now prepare to witness the power of this fully armed and operational battle station"

Cool stuff, thanks for the links. Any alternative to killing is probably worth the $ spent. Wonder if they'll make a portable version

The Army's Tactical High Energy Laser System (THELS) is a remarkable weapon. It can (and Has) destroyed artillery shells in flight.

Hey ... maybe that's why Arnie is so anti-gun. He thinks standard procedure for purchasing firearms involves shotgunning a gun store clerk.

Until they make some serious progress on portable power supplies these types of beam weapons are pretty limited in their application.
