Wanted: Starting Loads for .22 Newton

A young friend of mine, with rather unusual tastes is building a modern .22 Newton. He already has his reamer on order, custom made for .224" bullets, rather than the .228" of the original Newton.

He's looking for some starting loads using 75gr-90gr bullets. All the old data he can find is for 100gr+ bullets, and using powders from the 1920s.

Basically this is a .22-6mm Remington, or 5.56x57mm, using the Mauser 57mm case length. Any ideas for starting loads with modern powders?

Action is a good Mauser 98, so no worrier about pressures.

Hello, 44AMP. Wow, now there's an old timer you don't here too much about today! I have always had an interest in this cartridge. I am away from my books, but I will see what I can find.. This was a bit ahead of it's time as far as powders went.. but perhaps Phill Sharps book will have some existing powders listed.

WOW... your young friend sounds as eccentric as I

I don't have any Newtons but my "mentor" has a couple, that he loads for ( though I think he made is own bullets for the 22, in standard Newton diameter ) ... I have to call him today anyway, maybe pick his brain on powders & starting loads...

PEETZA's got the program...

I have a crusty old retired tool & die guy...

my mentors advice... the 22 Newton with a .224 bullet ( my buddy has an actual Newton gun that has been rebarreled in .224 believe it or not ) would be as he put it, for all practical purposes the same as the 5.6 X 57 RWS ( of which there is current loading data in the newest Hornady manual )... while there, we looked at the differences between that & the 220 Swift, & he thought any of the starting loads for the 220 Swift would be fine, but the Swift pushes same weight bullets a couple 100 ft per sec faster than the 5.6 X 57, so you would want to stay away from the hotter loads without working them up in your / his particular rifle...

between the modern program, & the dying grey matter of an old gun smith, you should be able to come up with some good places to start...;)

There is load data for the 22-6mm in the Hornady 7th Edition Handbook Of Cartridge Reloading. You could use this data to work up loads for any of the .224" X57mm cartridges (22 Newton, 22 TNT, 22-6mm, 5.6X57mm, etc). I am currently building a .22 TNT for a customer, and I will use that data to work up loads. There is also some load data here.

May Juen 1990 Handloader has data for the 22 newton.

(not responsible for transcription errors....)

70 grn hornady imr7828 45 grns 2.780 2961 fps, 44 grns of irm 4350= 3276 fps, 64 grns of imr4530 = 3450 fps, 46 grns of mr3100 =3154, 49 grns of mr3100 = 3372 fps

84 grn schwartz
49 grns of imr 7828 = 3232fps
50 grns of 7828 - 3311 fps

This is the key article in handloader.

Not much in Rifle.

sound like he needs a copy of "wildcat cartridges" from wolfe publishing. Midway charges about $42 for it a great book.

Thank you for the replies!

I will pass this info on to him. I spoke with him today, and he plans on making his cases from .375 Ruger brass. I looked at the dimensions he had listed, and the Ruger cases spec about .01 larger than the original Newton at the head. He understands, his ".22 newton" will not be the pure original Newton, but is a .22 Newton inspired or "Newton Revisited" wildcat.

OK, I got clarification, he is planning on doing a .30 Newton nd a .400 Newton later on, and those will be based on .375 Ruger brass. His .22 Newton project will use 7x57mm brass as a starting point.

Thanks for all the info, and if you have any more, I'll happily pass it on. He has a prepped action, his reamer is on order, and he will be making his reloading dies also. He is a machinist by training, is studying under our best local gunsmith (who's work I have seen, and is a master craftsman), I expect to see a fine custom rifle come from this project in a few more months.

I know this is an old thread, but my retired machinist buddy is looking for load data for 70 grain bullets & it brought me here on a search...

thought I'd pass along this link... seems you can get new brass with correct headstamp... at least if this info is up to date & correct...

44 if your buddy is still building, this link might be worth a look...

Phil Sharpe's book only had obsolete powders. BUT "Cartridges of the World" 10th ed. has one load listed for a 70 gr. SP with 40gr 0f 4350 powder for 3250 fps. Maybe this will help

my buddy buys all the COW books... it may have been the 1st load he tried, which was too hot, extraction issues, so he was looking for some other options...
