Getting Busted for Wearing a Peace T-Shirt

By MIKE FERNER

Yesterday afternoon, drinking a cup of coffee while sitting in the Jesse Brown V.A. Medical Center on Chicago's south side, a Veterans Administration cop walked up to me and said, "OK, you've had your 15 minutes, it's time to go."

"Huh?", I asked intelligently, not quite sure what he was talking about.

"You can't be in here protesting," Officer Adkins said, pointing to my Veterans For Peace shirt.

"Well, I'm not protesting, I'm having a cup of coffee," I returned, thinking that logic would convince Adkins to go back to his earlier duties of guarding against serious terrorists.

Flipping his badge open, he said, "No, not with that shirt. You're protesting and you have to go."

Beginning to get his drift, I said firmly, "Not before I finish my coffee."

He insisted that I leave, but still not quite believing my ears, I tried one more approach to reason.

"Hey, listen. I'm a veteran. This is a V.A. facility. I'm sitting here not talking to anybody, having a cup of coffee. I'm not protesting and you can't kick me out."

"You'll either go or we'll arrest you," Adkins threatened.

"Well, you'll just have to arrest me," I said, wondering what strange land I was now living in.

You know the rest. Handcuffed, led away to the facility's security office past people with surprised looks on their faces, read my rights, searched, and written up.

The officer who did the formalities, Eric Ousley, was professional in his duties. When I asked him if he was a vet, it turned out he had been a hospital corpsman in the Navy. We exchanged a couple sea stories. He uncuffed me early. And he allowed as to how he would only charge me with disorderly conduct, letting me go on charges of criminal trespass and weapons possession -- a pocket knife -- which he said would have to be destroyed (something I rather doubt since it was a nifty Swiss Army knife with not only a bottle opener, but a tweezers and a toothpick).

After informing me I could either pay the $275 fine on the citation or appear in court, Ousley escorted me off the premises, warning me if I returned with "that shirt" on, I'd be arrested and booked into jail.

I'm sure I could go back to officers Adkins' and Ousleys' fiefdom with a shirt that said, "Nuke all the hajis," or "Show us your tits," or any number of truly obscene things and no one would care. Just so it's not "that shirt" again.

And just for the record? I'm not paying the fine. I'll see Adkins and Ousley and Dubya's Director of the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, if he wants to show up, in United States District Court on the appointed date. And if there's a Chicago area attorney who'd like to take the case, I'd really like to sue them -- from Dubya on down. I have to believe that this whole country has not yet gone insane, just the government. This kind of behavior can't be tolerated. It must be challenged.

Mike Ferner served as a Navy corpsman during Vietnam and is obviously a member of Veterans For Peace. He can be reached at: mike.ferner@sbcglobal.net

Mr. Ferner is apparently one of those trouble makers who isn't "with the program". Don't we have camps where we can put these people for reconditioning?

Putting aside the fact that I agree to the BS factor of this, I'm just curious as to what part exactly did "Dubya" have in any of this? ERIC

His freedom of speach was obviously violated. A right he deserves more than anyone who has not served this country. I for one support the war, but not crap like this. That being said, freedom of speach has limits. Like yelling "fire" in a crowded place. Or "I have a bomb" aboard an aircraft. Or protesting at soldiers funerals. But he was within rights if everything in the story is true.

OTOH, I doubt that this was all that happened. There are two sides to every story. And as my high school AP US History teacher always said, "Consider the source". His obvious distaste for the current administration leads me to belive he has an axe to grind and that his side may not be 100% what happened.

Big Ruger, never let truth get in the way of a good rant!

I also suspect more than what is being told, if only because of the inclusion of "Bush" in his story.

He didn't mention any other reason for being in the VA Medical Center than to make a scene. They gave him a reasonable time to make his statement to other veterans, many who were probably irritated by him. He was given a chance to leave but chose to make a scene for political purpose and was arrested. Selfish. Got what he wanted. Tom, Vietnam 1969.

If only this was a unique occasion....
At what point did it become okay to arrest people for 'protesting' for wearing a t-shirt?

Gee...

Does this mean that wearing my white t-shirt picturing a rattlesnake on the American Flag with the words "Don't tread on Me" on a university campus is a form of "hate speech"? or "protest"? Would it be "hate" speech if I wore it in a local Mosque?

Silly question...Was Bush visiting that medical center last weekend? That would make this whole episode make sense. Wouldn't make it right, but it'd fit the pattern.

George Bush is just a symptom (and John Kerry would have been, too). The disease is the increasing and entirely unAmerican regimentation of public and private behavior according to neblous standards of supposed "patriotism," enforced at the whim of legions of unthinking little tin dictators.

Personally, I fly a Gadsden flag these days, when I fly a flag at all. The Stars and Stripes don't carry the same meaning they once did, and I blame every nodding ninny who "went along wioth the program" no matter if it was imposed from the Left or the Right. By 1913, this country already had more governmnet that it needed and government has grown like yeast ever since. Funny thing, we're generally poorer as a result.

We have a VA Hospital here. To the best of my knowledge you can't just hang out. You need to have an appointment, or be making an appointment, or be getting copies of your medical records, or something remotely connected to hospital business; anything other than just loitering.

You know the type. The "hang arounds" at the VA. Most VA's have them and I for one will listen to them because they just want someone to talk to or here ther opinion. I have talked to staff and they say the same thing...they feel sorry for them, this is all they have or have had. It's stupid really, they have all they need at there disposal! They just need to tale advantage of it. Just my .02!

"Except that he wasn't busted for loitering"

I didn't say the government was effective, efficient or particularly logical.

I doubt that they would have busted him for anything if he'd been there to keep an appointment.
