The UT Austin Dean of the School of Architecture is leaving, he says, because of the law permitting licensed concealed carry on campus. One of the concerns he mentioned in the NPR interview was that students sometimes get upset in his classes and might start shooting if they had a licensed handgun. He also used a wild west reference and asked if gun rights supporters thought we should settle our differences by shooting it out.

I don't know if he actually believes this is the position of gun rights advocates but he should take comfort in knowing that allowing lawful concealed carry hasn't increased murders.

I'd be interested to see what other folks think about campus carry but it seems to me that it shouldn't be that big a deal.

I won't be sad to see him go. The arguments that he made in the NPR interview were substandard at best. If he had bothered to educate himself on legal and lawful gun owners, and the process that one goes through to get their CHL, he would know that they are some of the most law abiding citizens around.

He should be afraid of the students that carry without their CHL, and who have been carrying to his classes for years.

I'm betting he was going anyway, and decided to make a political statement on the way out, since he was already moving on.

I'm an instructor now in my chosen profession... If he is managing a class that may break out into a gun battle at any moment, somethings wrong with his classroom management technique.
Students come from all walks of life and temperament, but you can keep issues from escalating easily in most cases; if not, the police will come escort them off the property for you at no charge.
